Let’s Delve Off The Bridge Together ft. Brian Merchant
Added 2025-09-23 14:50:47 +0000 UTCIt's the free one!
Brian Merchant, of Blood in the Machine, joins us to talk about his new series, AI Took My Job. It includes stories from not just artists and translators, but tech workers, healthcare workers, and even suicide counsellors. But before that, we decide that in the bleakness of the day we could all use a moment of TF season one whimsy, and talk about a fridge with ads on it. Remember that?

2025-09-24 18:47:43 +0000 UTCI just got off a skip-level meeting at work. (I'm 2nd tier tech support at a bank.) My great-grand-boss just said he wants the tool he's developing, which would run reports on computers and identify issues before they occur, to be "like the minority report." Please free my people

2025-09-24 12:36:30 +0000 UTCMy work is doing another one of those AI pilot programs aiming to "improve productivity/efficiency by 33%." And I'm just like how would you even measure that? There were vague times listed doing X task takes y minutes without AI and z minutes with AI, but that's not going to be true for everyone. Does it really take 15 minutes to draft an email? Anyway, this is something one of the managing partners said when I posted a link to that MIT study talking about how AI pilot programs have shown no real ROI despite the millions of not billions pumped into them: "Really interesting -- definitely supports the notion that all the individual productivity in the work doesn't have a bottom line impact unless the business model is changed to take advantage of those productivity gains. That said, hopefully the interim improvements in work-life balance, speed to first draft (and maybe eventual overall quality), and being able to shed more boring, repetitive tasks are worth it even if they're harder to measure." That is so many words to say so little that I suspect he used AI to write it.
