Added 2025-08-16 14:27:03 +0000 UTCRiley's away this week, so Nova is in charge of the bonus and welcomes Kill James Bond's very own Devon to the show to discuss - among other things - continued rulings from the EHRC making it more difficult to be trans in the United Kingdom... and then the phenomenon of people getting into relationships with ChatGPT.

Such an insightful discussion on the human-machine interaction of it all.

2025-08-27 20:51:51 +0000 UTCSame, though I find it varies noticeably based on what *kind* of text I'm reading and why. If it's something I have to take notes on (i.e. academic, instructional, or specialist non-fiction); using a physical text or printout does result in more detailed notes. Whereas for fiction & general audience non-fiction, audiobooks help keep me 'in' the book and moving at the pace it sets without skipping around. So like, in terms of testable outcomes for measuring retention, I'm more likely to be able to accurately summarize a book I've listened to, and I'm more likely to be able to pull quotes from a book I've read in physical form. But whether one of those constitutes 'better' retention feels like it would depend on the circumstances.

2025-08-22 23:21:19 +0000 UTCDoes November have a source for the "physical books are better for retention" claim? I've noticed no difference between absorbing and remembering physical and ebooks, and I've actually had better results with audiobooks since I can't skim and read ahead like I usually do.

2025-08-17 13:50:36 +0000 UTCI used to work at a bra store doing fittings. I will note here that the teenagers brought in by their mothers never, ever wanted to be there, no matter how Female Bodied all the employees looked. The moms also always wanted to Be In Charge of the things their daughters wore (same as it ever was) and I spent a lot of my time saying things like "wearing only sports bras doesnt deform your breasts" and "your 12 year old already has C cups, she doesnt need a pushup bra in 6th grade". Anyway, my point being, I haven't read anything about the actual story, but I can easily imagine a teenager being embarrassed and her mother deciding to weaponize that.
