Pump It! ft. Ed Ongweso Jr

This Machine Kills’ Ed Ongweso Jr returns to the pod to talk about his series of essays talking about what he calls The Silicon Valley Consensus - an ongoing chapter in our interest in the convergence of reactionary politics and the profusion of data centres all over the world. Also, Trump says “everything’s computer”, and Rachel Reeves claims to eat crumbs from under couch cushions to manufacture consent for the largest act of planned social murder in the U.K. since 2010.

Blank Space slaps though. My favorite Taylor song by a mile and a fun pull at kareoke

I bet nothing feels better than making a point and having a guest say "exactly" and then substantively build on your point

The Samsonite store near my house just became a pokestop?

It's probably overstating the case a little (in terms of this is for sure the 2008 bomb again I think there's a lot of candidates for that, she's right everything you buy is a scam), Private Equity tends to overleverage their acquisitions and now that interest rates are rising a whole bunch of retailers that could shamble along forever at 0% are really feeling the pinch. And pension funds have always bought shit, probably some combination of ineptitude and the fact the lack of real growth opportunities is driving capitalism mad. Also there's the fact no one has any money for things that aren't rent, healthcare, car or food, so I'm honestly surprised more consumer companies haven't been going under since 2022. In terms of Joann's, it's never really been possible to save money sewing but at least materials used to be cheap, but somewhere in the last couple years every hobby has been classified. You used to be able to get raw materials for cheap at least even if you could never compete with the slave labor on making something, but now it's all a luxury hobby thing so even materials are priced at not a we're store that sells commodities but this is luxury good that says you're rich enough to have a hobby- it's fucked. And the Joann's near me refuses to hire people so the line is forever long at the check out, you can never find anything as the store is always a mess or doesn't have what you need anyway, and it's over priced.

jamin

God that's it isn't it. Trumps just a ex order away from creating the department of America dignity or whatever

Malcontent Battery Pack

Newsom could've been Khalif Ornia

hence therefore

I know it’s not popular but I desperately need yall to get my man on from the FT and explain why every business (Joann’s) is going under. Is this video frfr or total BS? https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT2g38Ltw/

Joey Bag O Doughnuts

I often don't find him funny either but some how the world's richest* man and most powerful* man trying and failing to be used car salesmen hawking shitty EVs on the Whitehouse lawn was the thing that broke through for me. We just live in the upside down world.

jamin

A trillion dollars?! How much freaking REAL infrastructure could you build for that much?!?

jamin

Rachel Reeves, the first politician brave enough to ask the question of "What if we made the Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen sketch official government policy"

Barney

It's true after all that we all get up and make capitalism each day and just stopping believing in it is enough, but that only applies to the worst people in the world at JPMorgan.

jamin

can't wait for the new Act Blue text, "Hey y'all, Pete Buttigieg here, I'm gay and my dick is small"

The Mr Beast version is just expired Feastables.

I’d like to point out that “robot” comes from a Slavic word for “slave” with “Slav” itself being the root for the word “slave”

Jermy

Children of men the book: quietus is being chained to a boat and drowned with 50 other old people in the ocean. Children of men the movie: quietus is a pill/drink poison that kills you instantly. The book version sounds cheaper lol

Thomas Cain

Makes me sad because I agree with it in principle, but I didn't realize until embarrassingly recently what it would mean in our privatized healthcare system, and it made me very disappointed in lots of things

Karl's Declassified

People are saying it more and more!

etienne

Don't worry they won't execute you. You'll just have to do a stint in the Tesla 'workhouse' piloting a remote control robot bartender. It's only the people who aren't able to convincingly pretend to be Grok that will be executed...

trev

Christ didn't realize there was a push to allow assisted dying to be done via private companies, I hate how often the way the assisted dying debate sidelines the risk to poor people, when I've talked to people about it they've been surprised when it's suggested that people's decision to die might exist in a social and economic context

Emma Shannon

You know that Newsom is a cool guy because he married and divorced Kimberly Guilfoyle (Donald Trump’s Jr’s ex-fiancée), briefly dated a 19-year old, then had an affair with his campaign manager’s wife.

Allen

To tie it into the back half of the episode, the whole system is held together by people believing in it. If literally every finance and business guy in the world is reading BAD NEWS BAD NEWS every single day, someone is going to blink.

Oliver Elliott

Newsom, Labour, much of corporate America, apparently Chuck Schumer have all bought into the idea that this is the Thousand Year Reich and they should jump on board early. Unfortunately for them, and as noted on the episode, this is a speed run to disaster and they are all foolishly attaching themselves to it. Read the WSJ or FT and it is -relentlessly- terrible news. And once it all truly implodes, -everyone- will know who is at fault.

Oliver Elliott

Ed pronounced Afrikaners eer style like engineers TMK gang take a shot

Tristan Ryan

I think he’s especially funny when his total contempt for the people who lick his boots comes out.

Oliver Elliott

Man... BetterHelp will give _anyone_ a sponsorship

Ijon Tichy

think the news on NHS England warrants some further attention - caveated with the fact that I obviously don't trust Labour as-is with the service, but it's hard to shed any tears over a Tory privatisation vehicle that Corbyn himself planned to abolish?

Spending my last seconds on Earth wondering why I have to watch adverts before the suicide booth activates.

When they eventually start doing austerity against American cops because there's nothing else left, you think it's gonna be like The Thunder Warriors or The Horus Heresy

The ugliest, dumbest people on earth are always the biggest proponents of eugenics

Noblesse Oblahaj

also, nova’s outburst of ‘i feel like i’m going insane’ is a very good summary of how it feels to work at a university at the moment (or the arts, or culture, or anything that’s not finance probably)

Nina

i like to pair the podcast with my anti-depressants (no wine in the morning (yet))

Nina

rachel reeves announces she is now a filter feeder made me laugh out loud. riley needs to also visit places like perth, canberra, tartu, and vilnius to do stand up comedy.

Nina

he's definitely not consciously funny, but sometimes the combination of his disintegrating braincells, the absurd contrast between his deeply petty mobbed-up-rich-guy background and his current incredibly high-stakes job, and his general hostility to being Normal combine to produce some proclamation or act that is so surreal that you kind of have to concede that there is some humour there? Like, if I'm remembering it correctly, 'happy thanksgiving to everybody, even the haters and losers' back before(?) his presidential run. If America had to have a demagogue rise to power at some point this is probably the most bleakly funny way it could have happened...

marilyn

It's just eugenics and malthusianism all the way down huh?

Leith Martin

I thought I was going a little crazy. Nothing that freak has said has ever gotten a laugh outta me I been hearing him blather since the 80s

I know this is a class thing (it's a grind to make current events programming one or more times a week and Donnie Deals provides an unending stream of slop to mediate), but the U.S. president is not actually funny.

Whoever's going to be interviewing Steve Bannon? Right now that's the New Statesman. You guys need to puncture that boil of columnists.
