Mega Dukes feat. Patrick Wyman
Added 2025-03-07 14:39:30 +0000 UTCIt’s time for another examination of historical parallels with lessons for our own time - today Patrick Wyman joins the gang to discuss the late Byzantine empire… a state with such a self referential, cosseted elite that they found themselves sprinkling imperial procession routes with rose water while their entire society crumbled from the outside in. Also, getting caught red handed in the metaverse, the Shawinigan Cocktail, and butter is churned into guns.

2025-03-08 03:09:39 +0000 UTCPresenting the byzantines as static and inflexible and unable to change truly is a completely incorrect way of looking at them. Sure there were times when that was true, but the Roman state retained a great degree of flexibility and dynamism, able to adjust and adapt far better than almost every other contemporary state. They outlasted the premier global powers, not once, but several times, and reformed their administration completely several times.

2025-03-08 03:05:55 +0000 UTCThere are a couple of Canadian made Bourbon-like whiskeys that are excellent quality. They are overpriced, because until now they have been more curiosities than anything, but now in the face of widespread Canadian distaste for anything American, I expect production to rise and prices of these whiskeys to fall. And honestly, they're very good whiskeys. I like Bookers, Blanton, and Pappy best, and while they can't touch pappy (nobody can, lets face reality) they're certainly as good as makers mark, buffalo trace, and are in the same league as Blanton's.

2025-03-08 02:29:43 +0000 UTCAs a Canadian, I can assure you that Nickelback is barely even a war misdemeanour. Canadian war crimes are FAR nastier than mere Nickelback. Even if we just confine ourselves to musical offences, we Have 'Doug and the Slugs', Celine Dion in the armoury, ready and waiting for when a mutherfucker steps up.

2025-03-08 02:25:19 +0000 UTCThe Left on Read team should add "Streams of Gold, Rivers of Blood" by Anthony Kaldellis to their queue. (I won't make fun of the stuff they read instead because I think they should actually read this book.)
