Britainology 93: Oliver Cromwell feat. Dr Eleanor Janega

For October's second Britainology, we're joined by friend of the show Dr Eleanor Janega to talk about the time that Britain deposed its king and installed someone worse. Way worse! Would it surprise you to learn that a) the reverberations of what Cromwell did in the 17th century are still felt to this day and b) he's not really someone you learn much about in school? We presume this is shocking.

Check out We're Not So Different here!

I know another nickname for Buckfast is Galway Swally because it’s also popular in Galway

If you ever wonder just how bad Cromwell and the roundheads were, they were considered monsters BY THE ROYALISTS. How bad do you have to be that monarchists look good by contrast. Sheesh.

We didn't learn hardly any salient English history back in the day at my school in England. Is it different if you go to a posh one? I didn't get into the local grammar. Do they get the secret lore or are they equally clueless?

imagine the netherlands being into weed and dubstep rather than mdma and hardtek

If Jamaica had stayed Dutch, I’m curious: would it have become part of the EU like the three Dutch constituencies in the Caribbean did (and remain today)? Because then Jamaica would be part of EU even post-Brexit, unlike, you know, the [British] UK.

iirc Love Thy Neighbour isn't 'basically' All In The Family, it was a specific and intentional adaptation.

So, an interesting side-note from the Cromwellian invasion of Ireland is that's where the word Tory comes from. It's from an irish word (toraidhe?) used to describe the guerrilla fighters on the Irish side.

Recommendation: Coupling UK v. Coupling US. I was listening to the episode about "Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em" and Nate brought up that "Love Thy Neighbor" is basically "All in The Family." I would be interested in how Nate & Milo would think about failures in cultural adaptation in the anglosphere.

The visceral against Cromwell has less to do with the fact he's a monster and more of the fact that he was weird about it.

Calvinism, as a doctrine, is just straight up the textbook definition of narcissism.

I went to a Jesuit high school in the US, and they only obliquely touched on Cromwell’s atrocities. On the other hand part of the core curriculum was a year-long course in “British literature”. (Latin was optional, though, as an alternative to French, Spanish, [IIRC] German, or, for the absolute sickos, Ancient Greek. Oddly I don’t remember Italian or Polish being options, but going from Latin to Italian is relatively easy as far as these things go.)

The other songs I remember singing were “O occhi manza mia” and “Au joli bois” (the latter being about cuckolding because of course).

*Tobacco’s but a wasting weed…* https://voices.pitt.edu/TeachersGuide/Unit1/Tobacco%E2%80%99s%20But%20an%20Indian%20Weed.htm We sang this song in a madrigal group my brother and I joined in high school, though we apparently sang a bowdlerized (i.e. non-racist) version of it.

As a half Irish person who lives over here, the awful stuff he did is basically never covered, and equally they don't teach people the troubles.

Honestly my favourite part of a level history was learning about the levellers and diggers and all the other strange sects of Christian millenarianism

I'm Irish, so no surprise on A, and I do think he should be taught in schools like he is here. As a monster.
