Britainology 90: Withnail & I

Thank you to the fan who commented that we should continue to explore Richard E. Grant's career. As such, we've watched the 1987 film WITHNAIL & I and.... enjoyed it? But it's very hard to escape the notion that 1987 Britain conjuring 1969 Britain looks indistinguishable from 2024 Britain in terms of vibes, aesthetics, degree of shitness, you name it. We hope you enjoy this!

I'd pay £28 for the Narnia pill

Serkles

I really liked Letter to Brezhnev but that would have to be a KJB crossover.

Cate Kneale

I have never watched this simply because every annoying guy in my generation quotes bits of it. I think it's just because it has drugs in it.

Cate Kneale

Or Saltburn. Which is terrible but gives weird British vibes very well.

Cate Kneale

Speedway is also a great song by black midi

Josh L

if you're taking film episode requests: The Cook The Thief His Wife And Her Lover. Great film that also examines british class weirdness

Ed carron

Talking about the first Danny scene at the start of the movie got me thinking about the mid 00s Johnny Vegas vehicle Ideal, which has, coincidentally, just popped up on streaming. So many relatable moments from buying drugs from randoms at turn of the century

Stuart Harrison

i spend a bunch of time around temple bar in dublin, i can confirm it's like birthright for irish americans, they all show up and get the same photos of the same dozen tourist trap bars, then get absolutely wasted in them singing trad band covers of mr brightside or whatever

Jayde D

The weekend-length pill referenced by Riley sounds like bromo-dragonfly. A very good example of the "can but shouldn't" category of psychadelics.

Athena Von Tharsis

In canada in 1980 the standard retail rate for a decent hit of blotter acid was 5$, or five hits for 20$. And decent weed (which was nothing like as good as nowadays) was 40$ an ounce.

spaced_out_armour

I'm just here to be the IndyCar defender in the comments

SylvieJ

Taking the IRA pill

Joe Wakefield

PLEASE tell me your 'Richard E Grant's oeuvre as lens for the class system' phase means you'll be doing Gosford Park next.

h tt

also Richard E Grant's father was a violent alcoholic, think that has had more to do with his not drinking than the allergy

Tovfly

Bruce Robinson was a young actor in Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, and was sexually assaulted by Zeffirelli, he's supposedly who Uncle Monty is based on. I think he's said before that's closer to Marwood than Withnail.

Tovfly

Milo's pronounciation of the Irish name Micheál ("Mee-haul") made a balaclava and armalite spawn into existence in my living room

Sa

Please, Mr. Deepthroat was my father.

HAUNTER

Derek and Clive would make a good britainology

Razbert Francis

Blowing past some of the best line reads in cinema with nary a mention, shaking my head over here. "Monty you terrible cunt", "we want the finest wines available to humanity", "even if it must be burglary", this film is *endlessly* quotable

Sir Kid Harmer KC

*Walter White in the SUV voice* NATE! NATE! LARRY BIRD IS NOT FROM SPEEDWAY! HE’S THE HICK FROM FRENCH LICK! A FULL 100 MILES FROM SPEEDWAY!

Matthew

1 vote for the Threads episode

Callum Butler

If you allow me to do some Polandology, but motorcycle speedway is like, a Top 5 sport in Poland, after like soccer, volleyball, and ski jumping, more or less. Like the speedway league there is basically the Premier League of speedway leagues. It’s prominent enough where from time to time a speedway guy will win Poland’s sportsperson of year, like one time this guy pipped prime era Robert Lewandowski, much to my bemusement. I don’t get it, nor does my family.

Matthew

I was a dedicated Pie In The Sky fan so it was even weirder for me.

SpookyPenguin

I also can't get out of my head that Uncle Monty and Richard Griffiths' character in History Boys are the same person at different stages in life.

Andrew Humphrey

I live in perpetual fear that Milo and Nate will come on one day and tell me something formative in my life is shit or bigoted. I am the age where some of my cohort have made this film their entire identity. The latter hasn't happened for me, great though this film is. And thankfully, so far, as of this episode, nor has the former.

Maria Neptune

the BBC used 16mm almost exclusively I think, which would be why it all looks so similar

Maria Neptune

quite charming that milo was surprised that jocks yelling 'fag' at randos from vehicles is a venerable american pastime

boo

think I have the car nate was half remembering. honda clarity. i have one, bought it on a salvage title off a tajik guy dealing cars out of a flooring store

Noah Blascyk

Would love to see you guys cover the films of Alan Clarke and Mike Leigh in the future ❤️

A Horse In A Man Costume

how can you watch the whole movie for work and still pronounce it "with nail" 🤔

Nick

My vote is for Doric giant.

Man, I Got Nothing

Orbital / Orbital 2 (US) uses it also and I presume they take it from the movie since it's later (1993) so it's a double quote.

SpookyPenguin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aFh4oTmIio it's 'Cool Your Boots' from the Ride album 'Going Blank Again'

Trashfuture

It's planet of the shapes of Orbital 2

Ian DeSoucey

The car with the wheel covers Nate is trying to remember is the Honda insight

Connor Francis

Came here to say this

Stephen Boyd

Nate, I think you'd enjoy Long Way Round as a bit of a palate cleanser from Top Gear. Where Top Gear were just cunts on tour, Ewan McGregor is just incredibly happy to get to do this sort of thing.

A premium hog

The giant sounds like Alan Moore

The Squash

you have to watch The F…ing Fulfords a documentary series about a poor aristocrat family

Greg Markman

Crucially, Speedway almost exclusively occurs on greyhound tracks

Stuart Harrison

I can't remember the song you're talking about, but the "stopped clock" clip is sampled on an orbital and I believe a Sasha and Digweed record

Ian DeSoucey

adolescent crush and excellent choice of actor

MI

Oh the depp enthusiasts, I forgot they existed for a bit there , but yeah defo more problematic in the current state of humanity, heh 👀🫣

Overzealous Euthanasiast

lol I’m well aware of Terry Gilliam, I confused my Johnny Depp enthusiasts

MI

you wouldn’t need to, they’re all variations on an identical theme

MI

I don't think you're supposed to watch them all in one go lol - holistic analysis' of directors tendencies and political beliefs was not the intention of original comment.

Overzealous Euthanasiast

Fun factoid: that politician's name is the Irish version of 'Michael', Micheál (pronounced mee-haul). This led to him being called 'Me-hole Fartin' on Irish social media.

Jack Fennell

You could reach back to Quiet Days in Clichy too, either way they’re all so amab coded it’s a little tiring

MI

Tim Burton? Nah It's Terry Gilliam, the Monty Python guy! He's got a much more solid portfolio of movies, though undeniably messy in their own way. Tideland is one I'll never forget. Brazil also.

Overzealous Euthanasiast

It's me, I'm the fan! Thanks for doing it and really glad you enjoyed it, did not expect you to do it so soon Go sparkplugs

Alex

Hey tbh I saw both those movies way before I knew anything about politics (thanks to an apathetic working-class upbringing and a lot of homelessness during young adulthood), so politics wasn't an available lens as much as: one of these felt like a lived experience directly calling me out while the other was some American guy I didn't even realise was based on a real person till a dealer I lived with told me about him years later lol - Recalling the experience is no value judgement on politics or overall quality, if it needs to be said 😇

Overzealous Euthanasiast

Can we get the Lads Holiday one that was promised wayyyyy back in one of the first few episodes at some point pls? Particular focus on the other Lineker in Ibiza is most welcomed

H

meh, hunter s thompson with the steering wheel on the right side

MI

How to Get Ahead in Advertising would have been ideal

MI

The life of a flamboyant wreckhead. How the film reached from the past to target me personally, I've yet to discover. More drugs are evidently in need of testing.

Overzealous Euthanasiast

This movie sums up living with my best friend in Australia before moving over to Britain
