Captain Gatso and the Hypertension Cowboy

It's the free one!

We discuss some UK-centric news this week, with a brief return to an American startup we’ve previously covered that—in the hopes of destroying school bus drivers’ unions—created Uber for school buses and may have facilitated a mass abduction? Or the world’s largest school bus traffic jam? We also uncover some archival footage of a certain 1980s Dutch pop band that went through some hard times in the early ’90s.

I can't tell if my nonce detector is working, this huge traffic jam of busses keeps going beep beep beep

I grew up in Clay county Florida. My school bus stop was exactly two miles away. My elementary school was around 10 miles away and my high school was around 20 miles.

Alice's assumption that Americans live 10 blocks from their child's school is symptomatic of something I see a lot in Europeans. They simply don't appreciate how large the US is or how much sprawl there is here. In US suburbs, it's not uncommon for even elementary schools to be 3 or 4 miles from you, as the crow flies. And getting there by any other means than car entails walking 5 or 6 miles, mostly along what amounts to a highway, frequently without sidewalks or signal lights that are even long enough to cross the road during.
