Post-Shug Clarity
Added 2021-09-22 23:34:30 +0000 UTCWe've found another terrible startup: a billion-dollar-valuation 'plastic recycling' venture that is too dangerous to actually work (but would absolve the oil industry of any need to change its business model). It operates via a concept called shuggling. It also has yet again involved a promised factory in Ohio that will never exist. Prepare to get shuggled.
(Editor's note: this episode has some slightly throwback sounds because Hussein and Milo's mics were, uh, suboptimal. I have done my best!)

Shuggler does like an old victorian job that was later rendered obscelete, by doing something very obvious that made it way easier. "And all the Shugglers used to line along the Thames banks, plying their trade..."

2021-09-29 08:12:36 +0000 UTCIts apparently an Irish loan word for a rocking motion, which might have a Yiddish origin itself in Shuckel. I can't find any reference to the word older than the shuggling stone (a several-ton glacial boulder in Ireland which someone can rock back and forth several inches with one finger or the aid of a stick) and i can only find that name recorded by the mid 1800's. English has shuffle, from the late 1500s, and shake, which is from old norse, so you can kind of see the words tracking west over time like that, the idea that some or all of those are loanwords that developed as the people were exposed to Yiddish isn't unreasonable even, but you would probably need someone to actually do the research there to prove it better than my half remembered history!
