That was one of the main challenges of setting up any semblance of an organized Romanian left in the past few years. On the one hand people adopting really vulgar class politics and parroting right-wing talking point fueled by the American propaganda. But more hurtful (at least personally) are the people who in a sort of reverse-provincialism avoid having anything to do with concepts having a whiff of Americanism, instead avoiding any kind of struggle before they can develop an authentically original Romanian way of talking about class, gender identity or race.

2020-05-21 11:46:50 +0000 UTCThis is interesting as an American because until recently we didn’t have any mass-media notion of an ‘authentic’ ‘working-class’ at all. So I don’t thinkclass reductionism means the same thing in the same place. Though recently somebody like JD Vance is doing exactly what you’re describing, and the culture war stuff is exactly the same. We also had an assault of totally generic southern (=Brit northern) redneck right-wing identity roughly ten years ago like with Duck Dynasty
