Being part of the Olympics can help to standardize and regulate a sport, including weightlifting. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) sets the rules and regulations for the sport in the Olympics, and other international competitions. Without this governing body, there could be multiple organizations with different rules and variations of the sport, which could lead to confusion and lack of consistency. The International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) also plays a similar role in regulating and standardizing powerlifting. However, as you mentioned, without the Olympics as a platform, it may be harder for the IPF to have as much influence in the sport and the potential for variations of rules to persist.

Being in the Olympics helps a lot for weightlifting to maintain its, shall we call it, pureness. If not, I can easily see myriads of non-IWF federations show up with their version of weightlifting, some would allow arm re-bend, some would use a thinner bar for snatch, some would use a whippier bar for C&J, etc. IPF definitely should take the initiative to "purify" powerlifting, but as long as it is not in the Olympics, I think the madness of powerlifting would persist.
