They are often hidden in scenic places to make you discover stuff. You open the box, take the paper inside, add your name and hide it back. Amazing for discovering places, and super fun alone, with friends or a date https://www.geocaching.com/play Also, a geocache empty is kinda spooky because someone removed the paper, but not the box, so it's weird. It's good practice to be discrete to not be seen by geomuggles: the term is used by geocachers to refer to those not involved in or aware of the sport of geocaching. So a cache that has been tampered with by non-participants is said to be plundered or muggled and they usually remove everything or throw it away, not just remove the paper
