Something is definitely screwy in my PC

But the whole system has taken to freezing lately in an odd way. The audio will still continue on, but the interface will either freeze solid, or slow down to an extreme crawl. Sometimes only my cursor will barely move while everything else stays frozen.
This seems to be worse after I play any games.
It also will not shut down properly anymore.
Some basics; I do not have a virus. I do not have any storage problems/OS problems that I know of.
I am thinking maybe my ram or video card is going screwy, but it could also be my CPU, who knows? Right now I am leaning toward video card problems, but I am not an expert. I am not an idiot, but I am not an expert either.
Any ideas out there? Last thing I need right now is a system failure that I cannot afford to fix.
