(WIP at the moment)
I like to think that queen Chrysalis is much deeper than just another hammy villain.
What were her motivations behind who she was? To keep her species alive and thriving; perhaps she was never even aware that changelings could become non-parasitic.
After her various defeats she clearly lost some marbles, but in addition she's still too prideful, vengeful, and even angry with herself to consider reformation of any kind. In her eyes, she's a failure. She led her people astray and her empire crumbled to dust as a result.
So consider this. If Chrysalis took extreme pride in her leadership and built her entire sense of self worth around it, Thorax evolving in a way she was completely ignorant of would shatter all of her preconceived notions of greatness. In a single moment a random member of her former brood proved that her long practiced methods were unnecessary. Her people could have been something greater all along and she never saw it.
All self esteem crumbled; like her empire.
So, still addicted to her deeply rooted pride and desperately licking its wounds, she slaps away any helping hoof and allows thoughts of anger and revenge consume her mind as a form of escapism. The more time she spends on vengeance the less time she has to face her personal demons.
But those nights alone in the Everfree get so quiet, don't they?
EDIT 1: Added updated WIP.
