POLL! - What should we do about 1.17?
Added 2021-05-09 17:38:11 +0000 UTCHey Patrons!
This post is long overdue, and I apologize for not posting much here lately. I'm gonna try to get back to more regular posts for you guys here soon. This post is super important though and I'd really love it if you could take a few minutes to vote on the poll here as well as participate in the discussion down in the comments on this post. I'd really love to get a great dialogue going on this topic. The Discord is great, but after a day or two it's hard to go back and check on things...whereas here we can dedicate the comment section to this specific topic.
As you may be aware, nearly a month ago Mojang announced that they were going to be splitting the 1.17 update into two separate updates (more info here). According to Mojang, part of the 1.17 content will be released this summer, and the other half will be released around the holidays at the end of the year (which will be patch 1.18).
For us, this poses some interesting challenges for our Patreon server...and that's where I need your help! First of all, please vote in the poll. Secondly, I'd love to continue discussing this with you guys so please leave comments, thoughts, concerns, suggestions, etc. about this topic as a comment on this post.
Here's some additional info:
- The devs at Mojang have seemingly hinted at there being no need to start a new world for the 1.17 update (summer).
- Mobs + Blocks are the main features coming to the 1.17 update, and according to Agnes in the announcement video at 5:35 she states that:
"you actually will be able to get almost all the biome blocks in survival even in the summer update."
My thoughts:
- Personally, I think it'd be a lot easier for us to continue playing with the same world we currently have. We may have to go waaaaay out to new areas for the newer blocks this summer, but I think that could introduce some new adventures, community events, etc. I've heard of the term "trimming chunks" used before, but I've honestly never done it and haven't ever looked into it. Maybe Skynode knows something about it, but I haven't asked them yet. I was considering putting that in as an option for this poll, but I thought it'd be best to keep things simple as well as leave room for thoughts and suggestions in the comments. Chunk trimming could be a decent option though as it may be able to bring us these newer features "closer" to our current area in our world (not having to go out as far), but I would also want to make 100% sure that we wouldn't be accidentally deleting things that people have built in the process. Overall doing something like that would be more complicated and would be more work & time on my end.
- So for now, I'm personally leaning towards just rocking & rolling along with the same world we have, updating that world to 1.17 this summer, and then doing a completely NEW world when 1.18 is released at the end of the year.
- Also, keep in mind if/when we update to 1.17 when that releases, that it will likely break all of our datapacks. That is unless we wait to update to 1.17 once those datapacks are updated as well. Just something to think about.
Ok folks, sorry this post is so long but it's definitely an important one. Mojang threw us a curveball here so I'm just trying to make sure we do the right thing. This is your chance to be heard and I hope you'll vote and leave your thoughts in the comments below. 𧑠Thank you for reading this, and thank you for your continued support here on Patreon!
