Added 2019-05-29 19:31:14 +0000 UTCThe Red Army achieved a total surprise against the Army Group Center. The Germans refused to pull their units back thinking that this was just a smaller scale attack and out of Army Groups strength of 850 000 men 300 000 were lost during the initial encirclement. The results exceeded expectations and the Germans found themselves in a position not able to offer strong resistance and began to withdraw. This sped up the speed of the Red Army's advance, but at the same time didn't allow them to encircle more German units in the follow-up operations.
As of 1st August everything seemed to go well. The Germans had refused to pull Army Group North back south from the exposed position and Red Army prepared to begin to orchestrate its destruction. Already the land communications between the Army Group and Germany had been cut by the Soviet forces.

2019-05-30 00:55:44 +0000 UTCI remember an interview with a german ww2 veteran, he mentioned not realising the war was going badly saying something along the lines of "We were just retreating and regrouping our forces and soon we would attack them again and win the war.", so it seems german propaganda was very effective hiding the impending doom.
