Added 2018-09-01 09:41:04 +0000 UTCHaving seized the initiative, the Axis forces began Fall Balu - the operation to capture the Caucasus region. Not everything went by plan, however and the Red Army forces pulled back without much resistance, not allowing the Germans to encircle their forces. This left Red Army disorganized. The Germans the decided to capitalize on this by dividing their forces and instead of advancing first towards the Volga and then into the Caucasus, they went for both objectives simultaneously. They achieved success on both directions, but were unable to reach their end goals.
In other sectors the Germans prepared to carry out some more smaller encirclements and capture Leningrad, but by this time the Red Army had finished its deployment and went on the attack. The Germans had to expend their reserves on repelling the offensives and neither of the sides achieved their goals in the North and Center.
