The Netflix series Avatar has been released, what do you think of the trailer? Or maybe someone has already watched or started? What do you think about the adaptation in general? And who is your favorite character? ❤️

Yes, I want to know ALL 😋

Thank you very much for expressing your opinion! I enjoyed reading this! I don't see a problem with the characters speaking English since the series is still on Netflix, so I don't agree with that. The trailer interested me, I’m really interested in how they decided to adapt the anime and manga this time, so I’m starting to watch the series!

Very cool… or should I say “hot” 😂 haven’t seen many avatar cosplay recently! I’m excited but live action is always kinda weird feeling adaption wise! My guess if it goes well it’ll be like one piece~ and being a new wave of avatar lovers

Oh, so there's an Avatar series coming out ? Oh, okay, so that's why you did that Azula cosplay. That's what I wanted to know when I asked you why you chose that cosplay. Because in my head, Avatar was just an old cartoon that finished 10 years ago and nobody was interested in it any more. So the choice seemed very odd and unexpected to me 😅 Because I didn't know there was a series coming out. Now I understand ! I'm writing this at the end, the first paragraph is a very quick analysis of the trailer, and the second an analysis of the cinematographic form of the series itself, in general. Then it's just the conclusion and the end 😊 So I watched the trailer. I looked at who the directors and producers were and what they'd done before. And I'm pretty sure I'm not going to watch this series. It's not what I want to do with my time. Which isn't bad, or good, it's neutral. The trailer actually looks like exactly what we would expect from a trailer these days. The universe is sparkling and looks well recreated, the special effects look convincing, there seems to be a conventional and expected story, one more iteration of Joseph Campbell's monomyth, caricatural characters we've seen 100 times before, good guys who are good, and bad guys who are bad, and there seems to be a lot of action and spectacle, well, why not, I'm not a teenager anymore but why not ( don't take it wrong, you know how I like to be sarcastic 😅 ) I also note that the universe, the location and the atmosphere seem rather Asian, but when I watched the trailer, everyone was speaking in English 😳 What the hell is this ? Who did that ? Seriously ! Listen to me, imagine, once upon a time, there was the universe, in this universe appeared the galaxies, then the solar system, then the earth, water, micro-organisms, algae, and life, literally, imagine such a wonderful and incredible thing. And then, imagine, there's evolution, species, time, history, and that there would be one species in particular called human, and that through time and evolution, would have developed vocal cords, a sort of tube that exhales air, with a little muscle called the larynx that contracts to produce a sound more or less high or low, and with that, a mouth, teeth, a tongue, to modulate and give rhythm to these sounds. And now imagine that with this, this species would have developed an extremely complex and sophisticated communication system called _language_. Just try to imagine such a wonderful, magical and unbelievable thing. Well, this simple choice of direction shows that the director doesn't give a damn about reality, about capturing the world, prefers to live in his head, and is unable to pay attention and be careful about the world and to something as vibrant, intense, unique and wonderful as the human voice and language. Anyone who is even slightly attentive to reality and the world would have noticed this and would have been determined to capture it as faithfully as possible. Isn't a work of art supposed to make you feel things ? Because this is precisely a restriction of the sensitive field of reality, we don't feel anything. For me, seeing someone speak, and that person's voice is not the voice we hear, makes no sense at all. Without even mentioning the American imperialist aspect of having all these characters speaking English ??? So this demonstrates that the director is not in a process of capture, in an aesthetic process, he is in an industrial production process, because we know that this choice is not a choice, it's a non-choice. Because it's entertainment. Actually, the main problem is that it's a series. In other words, it's a cinematographic form that's completely normalized, standardized, conditioned and imprisoned by the industry of which it's the product. Especially as this one is not an independent production, or made by a studio like A24, it's almost like a blockbuster series, produced by Netflix itself. And the main problem with the serial film form is its neurotic obsession with the script, which must absolutely be at the center of everything. Absolutely everything must always serve the script, which is like a cage that imprisons reality and nothing can get out, nothing can stray from this marked-out path. And within this cinematographic structure only based on script and nothing else, nothing can exist. Because the script is not cinema. A script is a text. Cinema is images. And when the series is obsessed with telling its story and everything is at the service of this script, the series doesn't look at anything. It doesn't look at its material, its actors, or its world. And if the series doesn't look at anything, we don't see anything. Precisely where the most important and primordial function of cinema is to look, just look. And therefore, the serial cinematographic form is another instance of the realm of emptiness, which is perfectly suited to the series as capitalism's hegemonic mode of consumption. It's no secret that Netflix is literally the ideological trojan horse of capitalism. And what's very worrying is that it's now reaching into the very corners of our intimacy and our lives. So much that reading this, you or many people would be deeply upset and would absolutely want to defend Netflix at all cost as if it were your girlfriend or that it was a part of you. Which is extremely worrying about the mental hold this kind of industry has on people. And in keeping with its scripted-centrism, the series is really perfect for capitalism, because in its very structure, in its scenes, everything has to be optimized, everything has to be efficient, cost-effective and only profit-making, everything clear, without any room left for the unknown or opacity. But art precisely lies in opacity, and in the shadows that we can't understand, not in a flat, surgical clarification of everything, where everything is clear, flat and simple, which is actually just a lack of depth and inner life in these productions. So as everything has to be 'optimized', every scene has to be 'useful' to the script, it's never in a series that we'll see a scene like, for example, imagine, a static shot of a dining room table, in profile, early in the morning, and we would see two people arrive, a man and a woman for example, settle down and have breakfast, in a static shot, without any cuts, for 10 minutes, and without a single word, without dialogue between them. And without a single word, just through the footage and the captation of it, we would actually see so many things in the scene. We would see and understand that these two people are probably a couple, we would see their habits, what they eat, what it says about their social class, the precision of their gestures, eating in silence, and then understand that they have probably been a couple for a long time, because they don't even need to speak to understand each other, but most of all, we would see it, and we would feel, in this cinematographic experience itself. Then, 10 minutes would be a very long time for an uninterrupted static shot, so our eyes would probably start to wander around the shot, examining every detail of the decor, and we might understand this way the job these people do, still without a single word. I think this shot would be beautiful, and we would see a lot more here, and more intensely than in any digital, pointless, special effects we would see in a blockbuster ( To be honest, I'd love so much to film you in such a naturalistic setup, like just you eating something for 10 minutes in a static shot 😅 ) Btw, this scene sounds very "Hong Sang-soo" actually, but anyway. As this scene contributes nothing to the script, it would never exist in a series, never. So the series is a fundamentally limited cinematographic form, which limits the sensitive field of the world, and the field of perception. It abstracts matter, bodies, voices, situations, details. ‘Optimizing’ and ‘useful’ are words that should never be used to talk about art. Art is useless, and it's precisely because art is useless that it's so beautiful. Actually, I also wanted to talk about adaptations in general, and therefore matter and what art actually is, but I think I'll stop here, shall we 😅 ? So that was my opinion on the trailer and on the cinematographic form of the series itself. If you disagree, feel free to argue ! I'd love to hear your opinion. Of course, I'm not saying that all series are bad, but every good series is an anomaly in the production system, the exception that proves the rule ✨ Which doesn't mean you can't watch series or even have a good time watching them. Even me, when I watch a series, once a year, I have a pretty good time, but it's not an aesthetic experience, it’s entertainment. As always, art is something serious, so I'm demanding with it, that’s all 😊 ! So I imagine you're going to watch it ? I hope you will have a good time ! Let me know how it was ! I'll probably write Rei's comment tomorrow. Sorry that I wrote this instead of Rei's comment. I will do it tomorrow 🙏
