The spell that Scanlan uses to transform into animals and other creatures is called "Polymorph" in D&D. It's a 4th level spell that takes an action to cast and lasts for 1 hour, or until you lose concentration or it's otherwise dispelled. My guess is that he ran out of time, they could be using a shorter lasting version of the spell for the show or there could be a lot of time that we didn't see of him flying around.
