It's really good, but a huge time investment. ๐Ÿ˜… The first campaign is 115 episodes over 3 hours each... total of over 400 hours! The beginning is also rough with some audio problems and generally trying to find their flow - it also starts very abruptly in the middle of events since they just started streaming the game they had already been playing, and the events they start from don't happen in the animated show at all. Usually I think it's a good idea to dive into Critical Role from campaign 2 since that starts very strong, but of course the familiar Vox Machina characters are in campaign 1. Some people recommend jumping to C1E17 (start of some specific events) or C1E24 (start of Briarwood arc). The events in the first two animated show episodes happened in their home game before they started streaming it so the Briarwoods are the first events they have in common. They are also currently making abridged versions of the episodes, but so far only from the current campaign 3.

You know you can watch this campaign on Twitch. I am greatly enjoying watching this series and Gravity Falls with you.

Angelina

Dude sounds amazing, i think im going to have to watch the webseries after I'm done with this <3

Matthew Curry

Your intuition has been on point, very impressive!

Casey Gorman

Vox Machina was level 9 when the campaign started streaming, since they started with their ongoing home-game. When they went to Whitestone they were around level 12-13.

DracoMint

if you want a little look behind the scenes of the show, there's a series of documentaries up on youtube!

You speculated a bit on Matt's DM abilities... so while the fight in the campaign didn't go exactly as shown in the show, you were spot on how he's an expert at improvising dramatic situations, and making combat feel very narrative! So yeah, it could've gone just as you described, that's how he does things. And yes, he does also do planning to have the environment ready for cool narrative events to happen. He's said he often presents the players with a situation he only has some potential guesses on how it might go down, and he loves seeing what the players come up with to resolve them. He tries not to stick to what he thought might've been any "solutions", but instead takes the player's solutions and just guides the narrative to make it impactful, making it almsot feel like it had been planned that way, but acutally often improvising a lot on the spot. There are of course many good DMs and he's not unique, but still, he's really skilled at doing that!

Haha, this started to bother me, so I went and did some research! ๐Ÿ˜… So, turns out in campaign 1 episode 32 "Against the Tide of Bone" they fight against the zombie horde. According to the summary Keyleth raises a Wall of Stone (not ice) to block the street, and they climb on top of that. And this is indeed the moment Pike arrives as astral projection to help. She jumps down from the wall in the middle of the zomibes casting Destroy Undead, wiping out most of them.

Tiiu

I think in the campaign there might've been an ice wall by Keyleth to block the zombies, but it didn't go quite as depicted in the show. Pike was already with them at that point, and I remember something about her jumping down from the wall to the zombie hord to cast the Destroy Undead, which in the show she instead did at the moment she appeared from Astral Projection. So basically, the cool moments are adapted from the campaign, but a bit reorganized to fit the flow of the show format better. Later on in season 2 they do start to take even more liberties, and replace some campaign fight scenes with more interesting challenges. I assume because repeated fights feel dynamic in D&D but start to get monotonous in the show. It still keeps on following the campaign events in general, and keeps the gist of the story for sure. And they do keep the idea of taking cool moments from the campaign and reorganizing them to fit the show.

Tiiu

This just occurred to me and I have watched episode 10 several times but Cass's statement, when she made the announcement "we are only sparing your life" thing to Ripley, she meant the "we" to mean the Briarwoods. The attention to detail on this show is mind boggling.

Wayne Nubile

I would love to hear more of your thoughts after the episode

Phoebe

The astral projection form is even cooler because in the campaign cause Ashley was Skyping in. She was there but her body was elsewhere just like in the game/show

Phoebe

Cass and Vax being Charmed is not because they were bit, Charm is a magic ability vampires have. Itโ€™s the same thing Silas did to Sovereign Uriel (who he didnโ€™t bite)

Phoebe

Also the Critical Role intros, the last few have amazing songs sung by the cast (I think you can find compilations on YouTube)

Phoebe

So it's been multiple years since i finished watching the Campaign (roughly 447 hours) but if i remember correctly there was no ice wall created by keyleth. This Show goes sometimes a different path than the campaign to make it more show-like. It's more noticeable in the newest season (if you know the campaign of course). Also Pike's projection form was due 'cause the player (Ashley Johnson) was working out of town and could only sometimes join them in a session. different topic now. I saw u started watching tfs's Hellsing abridged and maybe you've heard this before but do u plan to watch their Original series "HFIL" were they're showing Cell in Hell?

Zarad

I would love to see you react to scanlanโ€™s songs! Especially the season 1 recap before you do season 2

Phoebe

Your speculation is almost always spot on!

spiritkit

This (zombies) did happen in campaign, they were tapped, I don't think they got a short rest. Right from the last two episodes to zombies. No rests.

spiritkit

My weapon is Pike!

spiritkit

Bidet! Was looking forward to this. I have had a day! Lol.

spiritkit

Always hyped for more Vox ๐Ÿ˜Š
