Six the Musical: Don't Lose Your Head (Original Music)

Dude.... she's controversial because Henry literally changed the entire religion of England to get divorced and marry her and became THE HEAD OF THAT NEW CHURCH pretty much at her suggestion. She was sending him books by prominent Protestant writers and religious philosophers that basically said "screw the Pope, heads of state should also be religious figureheads" and his narcissistic ass ate that shit up. She knew exactly how to play into his ego and make suggestions with *just* enough plausible deniability to keep her from getting in real trouble (at least at first), and to say she wasn't "into politics" is probably the biggest mischaracterization this musical makes.

I think she was naive to think she was special and he only swayed for her and not bc he just wanted his cake and eat it too

Also, Henry ACTUALLY executing Ann was a huge shock, a lot of people expected him to give her a last minute pardon and then divorce/annul the marriage (because at that point he was head of the church and could just do that very easily) but he didn’t. Again it depends which historian you read but the whole lead up and actual execution is very irregular as far as executions of that time go (e.g. TW A BIT MORBID WHOOPS I FIND THIS FASCINATING Henry paid extra to have a French swordsman execute Ann instead of the kind of executioner usually used, Swordsmen were far more accurate and delivered a more painless clean hit, but were far more expensive)

2025-11-19 12:53:06 +0000 UTCOk so I have a degree in this (history) and I do wanna just quickly say, I like a lot of these songs because I think they do a decent job of covering at least one facet of the women they’re portraying (obviously you can’t deep dive into the full complexity of each of their lives in one musical song so I can’t criticise for that) THE exception is this one. I love the song as a song but as a song about Anne Boleyn???? I have issues. Because she was very political, especially when it comes to religion like she was HEAVILY involved (and religion was extremely political at the time), she was very intelligent, she only became Henry’s wife because she promised him a son, Catherine A. Was essentially at an age where there was no chance she could give Henry a Son, Ann refused to be a mistress like her sister and her family the Boleyns were connected to the Howards (who also appear later with Wife number 5) who were a very important and influential family and most likely very involved with pushing Ann to the king whether she wanted it or not. The whole cheating thing was entirely fabricated because she wasn’t well liked at all, and she’d made an enemy of Thomas Cromwell (and that whole relationship is a SAGA to get into so I won’t, but he was extremely politically influential and did NOT like Ann so, depending on who you read, he was to a greater or lesser extent involved in her downfall, and that itself is probably a mix of her lack of popularity, lack of providing Henry a son, and the extreme religious tension at the time). Basically you were RIGHT when you said you thought Ann was political, this song… really doesn’t paint her favourably at all and is flat out incorrect with that line

2025-11-18 02:38:31 +0000 UTCAnne was very political, she's controversial because she broke England from the church, she was accused of sleeping with other including her own brother or cousin if I remember correctly and she was innocent and walked to her execution on her own with her head held high. (Please correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a a few years since I was super into SIX.)

2025-11-10 11:46:29 +0000 UTCThe raisin she’s so controversial is because she broke England from the major church at the time and then king Henry made he’s own version of the church with a new set of rules one of them being that the king could divorce his wife without permission from The Pope

2025-11-08 04:55:01 +0000 UTCShe was the mother of Queen Elizabeth the first The thing about her being promiscuous was false allegations because she couldn’t produce a male heir and so she was executed

2025-11-08 04:50:17 +0000 UTCAnne B, Katherine A, and Catherine P were all incredibly intelligent, well educated women who had strong opinions and convictions. Henry didn't want a partner who challenged him, he wanted a subservient yes woman. Anne was protestant and with the change from Catholicism, she was pretty outspoken to Henry, which annoyed Henry. Add that to only having a girl and Jane being right there, she didn't have much of a chance. Even though Catherine survived, there was a point where Henry got fed up with her religious debate with him that she was almost arrested and would have probably had a similar fate to Anne had she not grovelled and changed.
