Hiring - Test shoots!
Added 2023-03-29 17:41:54 +0000 UTCI'm about to hire a camera operator/editor. I have it narrowed down to two candidates. I had each come to the shop and do a test shoot with me, and then edit it down to a short segment that will be part of the iPhone shell video.
Here's the first one: https://vimeo.com/812866142/1901610669
And here's the second one: https://vimeo.com/812886493/8531750ab7
Which do you like better?
P.s. I'll have an update on shirts and hoodies in the next day or two!

I won't vote for or against either as I feel both are equally good. Both wanted to impress you a little to much, thereby using a little to much overdramatic music. Both were afraid to cut down the samples down to size. Both scenes don't need more than a few pops and cuts to show you mixing the acid but both scenes felt very drawn out. This might be due to the application situation.

2023-03-31 07:50:16 +0000 UTCI prefer the threading one. I understand the importance of having dedicated camera operators, but I believe you can still try and emulate the look of a more "personal", "raw" video, with more static cameras (on a tripod) and fewer cuts. The multiple camera angles for a simple piece to camera in the second one were too strong a departure from your channel usual style IMHO.

2023-03-30 16:18:26 +0000 UTCI think either would be a good fit. Both could do with way less cuts. In the end I think the second one was just a little better with lighting, focus.

2023-03-30 15:50:36 +0000 UTCSecond one, but less cuts. This is not TikTok, I assume people here have at least a bit of attention span left. I really enjoyed how "raw" your videos ware. A bit of extra eye candy is fine but don't over do it.

2023-03-30 13:15:34 +0000 UTCI like the first one. I like the second one a little bit more. It's very close though and I think either operator could get the job done very nicely.

2023-03-30 10:58:13 +0000 UTCThe idea of letting people vote was brilliant! Looks like both people are very talented and professional. I put my preference in but in all honesty both of these camera guys know what they're doing and have great potential. I would have focused more on the personal aspect of the cooperation and the chemistry. In my head it's more important than the differences between the sample quality we've been shown.

2023-03-30 07:30:35 +0000 UTCBoth were good(!) but the second one (anodization) did better with the focus.

2023-03-30 04:09:25 +0000 UTCFor me the first video was a better representation of how I feel about Strange parts. Slower transitions, pauses where needed and bit of quiet. Also who doesn't like a good montage when it's required. To me Strange Parts is a long journey that takes time to achieve the desired goal and is not to be rushed. The second vid felt a bit rushed with shorter transitions and the music felt a bit off for a carefully controlled chemical reaction scene. Anyway just happy to be along for the journey!

2023-03-29 23:45:46 +0000 UTCOh - I should say that I watched both clips in the living room while wife was watching TV so sound was turned off - I voted purely on visual content. Having just read Patrick's comment I would say that overly-intrusive is an instant turn-off for me. But that's an easy fix - if you agree then just tell either "no music other than the intro"!

2023-03-29 22:40:31 +0000 UTCSecond one (anodization) but purely because I prefer the jumping between handheld and fixed camera. That's only an additional 5 points out of a hundred though - they were both very good.

2023-03-29 22:38:20 +0000 UTCAgree with most of the points raised. A steadi-cam would have helped both videos. Overall, I felt the second was better excepting the music selection which felt kind of "off-brand" for Strange Parts. I also felt like the second made better choices on camera angle with respect to the lighting. I feel like a possibly more important component would be your rapport with this person as you'll be working with them closely and trusting them with your brand and message.

2023-03-29 22:02:26 +0000 UTCPoints for threading: Better music, better camera focus Points for Anodization: Better editing, more watchable Overall I preferred Anodization. Wish the music weren't quite so intrusive and hope to get focus under control a bit more.
Patrick Moynihan
2023-03-29 20:04:05 +0000 UTCAlthough there were more camera cuts, I found the second video more watchable, and less intrusive.

2023-03-29 18:11:24 +0000 UTCI agree 100% with this feedback - I had the exact same thoughts!
Eric Merrill
2023-03-29 18:06:29 +0000 UTCif it helps i have feedback for both Threading guy can be more stable in holding the camera a lot of wiggles. Anodization guy can reduce how many cuts there are and how many angles/cameras there are for the same scene.
