Firefly - Episode 2

Firefly - Episode 2

Laughter is definitely good medicine!! and I agree, why can't we have more intros like this nowadays?? They're so much more enjoyable! Ya.. the companion thing is super interesting and there's so many layers to it. I obviously don't ever enjoy watching women (or anyone) being treated as "less than" (unless they're Ferdifuckingpieceofshit), but at the same time.. I don't really love the idea of glorifying or romanticizing sex work - in any universe. It's a very two sided coin because that kind of work can invite some serious misogyny which is disgusting.. but the other side of that coin is that any job/situation that puts women in the position (even by their choice) to offer up their bodies and affection as a product or commodity is a dangerous and disgusting form of misogyny in and of itself. So while it's nice to see her not being treated as a piece of shit over it, I still kind of grimace at the idea of it being so romanticized like I said. Giving women respect because they sell themselves isn't true respect. It's a super fucked up sneaky form of misogyny and the sneakiness makes it feel just as bad in some ways. And then to add onto that, that they can own human chattel as servants.. making them the oppressor of others.. It just all feels super gross. I like Inara's character and I'm excited for her arc and to get to know her more, but her job and the world-building surrounding it are pretty grotesque in my opinion. For me, the immorality of that type of work is grounded in the commodification of women. The "services" they offer are something so personal, so sacred to the human spirit and it's inherently damaging to become so detached to those parts of yourself that you can sell them at will. So with all that said, it's definitely an interesting part of the show that made me think quite a bit.. because as I said, it's nice to not see her being treated like a piece of shit, but there's so many other heartbreaking and disgusting layers to that concept that are still festering under the surface and hiding even better because of her "respectable" treatment. The Mal/Zoe dynamic is definitely something I'm keeping my eye on. Zoe's face when Mal said "just remember that I love you" was more than just confusion. Wash does seem mostly unphased by their dynamic, however in the first episode he does make some comments about how she prioritizes or listens to Mal more than him pretty regularly. I can't remember the exact context or words used but he definitely notices and part of him definitely cares. I really like Wash so I hope he doesn't get hurt in any way! Zoe better treat him well! Mal and Zoe have been through so much together and been "partners" in some form or another for so many years... it's a hard bond to compete with. And while Mal obviously only sees her as a friend (at least so far that's what it seems given he's so very clearly in love with Inara) I wouldn't be surprised to find out Zoe is harboring some feelings in there somewhere. River is very interesting, definitely need more info on that moving forward! They seem to be playing it close to the chest with that storyline so far! oh, and I caught that reference this time! You said it was from the old batman show or something? I remember you telling me the last time you used it on me! lol!

Hey Kelsea. Sorry to hear you and the fam are under the weather. Laughter is good medicine and Firefly is the perfect antidote. Unfortunately, your laugh is infectious, and now I've caught the bug. 😁 I agree that the intro is fantastic, and I might add, old school. Why can't we have intros like this nowadays that show the actor's characters and names while we enjoy music and action scenes? Another thing I loved is what you touched on. In this age / universe, "Companions" are revered. They possess status and demand respect. Companions seemingly own chattel, including servants. This concept demands discussion. It obviously provokes thought, contravenes beliefs and prods at long-held moral concepts. When exactly in history did "companions" become outcasts? Who decreed their status to be lowly, immoral and ugly? This is an interesting quandary, and I really enjoy Inara's character arc. Obviously Mal loves her, but how could he, given her vocation? Interesting. And also, Mal and Zoe do everything together, and yet she is married to Wash. The hint of chemistry between Mal and Zoe is ever-present. "Whatever happens, remember I love you," was not entirely a throwaway quip. Wash seems entirely unfazed by his wife's interactions with Mal. These simmering dynamics are what makes this delightful show so f**king interesting. If you fossicked about inside Jane's black soul with a giant flashlight, you might discover a good man hiding. His character is so well written, and so very entertaining. I'm really enjoying your Firefly journey. This is my kind of entertainment, and watching you laugh warms my heart. Cheers Kelsea. Oh, and why is River so important to the feds? What is so special about her? Stay tuned, same bat time, same bat channel.

Ya them being closer is not good!! Can't wait to see the next episode and continue on with this story though!

Yes Kelsea, I think the journey of Serenity is truly "a great time," as you say, but, the fact that those two ' blue hands' are 96 million miles closer to River and the crew is a bit worrisome. From your comments here, I believe you will appreciate Mal and Zoe's honor and the rest of this crew's humanity even more as we go further out in the black.
