If anything was copied, it was Harry Potter that copied it. Even to this day, every time I see Elrond first appear, in my mind I always hear him say, "Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson." I still think the film did Boromir dirty. He can come across as sleazy and weak, but he was one of the strongest and most honorable of men. It's just that the ring is that much more powerful. Anyone who can resist it is truly exceptional. As you pointed out, it was a major temptation to both Gandalf and Galadriel. What was really amazing was Aragorn being able to refuse it. I don't know if you noticed, but after Boromir's funeral, Aragorn was putting on Boromir's bracers.
