The stacking rocks was a Headstone for Tess... the only way he could say goodbye... Bill probably had a version of Napalm B in the flame canisters (will burn even underwater)... I have seen this episode a half dozen times and it still brings me to tears... great art is as great as it evokes emotion... this is truly great art...

That day when he was painting and Bill winks at him while watering flowers, you can see he's bothered and the painting doesn't look good. His muscle control as deteriorated and affected his ability to paint. Frank decided he was ready to die when he realized he could no longer paint Bill.

The sad thing is that Bill would’ve probably never lived his authentic life had there not been this apocalypse and coincidence of meeting Frank. From what I understand he still lived in his mother’s house by himself. He probably had a lot of internalised homophobia and that’s why he hated people and the world. Btw, not sure if you noticed but the song in the end by Linda Ronstadt is the one they’re playing on the piano when they meet.
