Yay I LOVE RENT!!!! just a heads up that that one isn't a reaction, it's just a "commentary" watch with me whatever you want to call it. I was OBSESSED with that movie in high school so it was so fun to revisit! Be prepared for me to sing too much.

I agree that keeping the books ending would have eliminated this frustration for me as well. Yes, always looking forward to more and still catching up, I love RENT and have not seen your reaction yet so it is on the list, : ) !

Ya I totally get what you're saying about the slow change. But in the book they end up together. So I just don't get why they had to change the ending to something depressing just to make a point, when the story already existed with an ending the writer intended.. ya know? But oh my gosh that scene where she swims out for the boat was one of the best in the whole movie!! I loved her character so damn much!! Happy you finally got to watch this one "with me"!! So excited for more!!

Hi, I Finally had a chance to watch your reaction to this! I saw it on Tubi and now it is in a cue of frequently watched films for me, some that may make it on your list at some point, all sapphic romance, drama or comedy. I generally did not watch films that don't have happy endings but realized that removed most of the sapphic genre. I have to look at the time period of course like we all do, but I think the change Charlie is talking about, that Lydia and Jean initiate, is slowly moving into his older adulthood, not the kind of change that was going to actually leave them be. It's like people will accept change but you have to spoon feed them as to not upset the heteronormative apple cart or stop any slow moving progress. But that still leaves all the sacrifices of those who taught communities these lessons but still could not have what they wanted. I think of all of the not happy endings and the strength of women and the LGBTQ+ people in history who moved the needle for everyone but never got to enjoy it themselves in a sense. That's what made Ibsen's "A Doll House" so jarring for people of that time when the housewife Nora just decides to say "fuck it", women have no value in society beyond being reproductive toys and I am leaving you with the kids and house and this life to go find my own way and who I am. Audience's freaked the hell out. Maybe change would have still come pushing like that, maybe faster, I dont know. But I cried a lot at much of this movie as well. Jean heroically swimming out to save Charlie's boat had me with tears of " what it must feel like to have someone do something that just makes you feel fucking special and shows you the kind of person they are". Thanks for posting this. I saw Kiss Me on your poll and have a feeling you will like it when you see it. Snapshots and Momma+Momma, (Italian) are really good even if just for you. "Portrait" will always be my most special but I enjoy the journey of all these films. : )
