To be fair, deaths do happen in the ring. It's not murder; manslaughter at best, but usually it's not even brought to court because accidents happen. (Granted, this was not an accident) but in sporting events a lot more leeway is often given.

2022-08-20 10:34:51 +0000 UTCSo here we see Apollo's pride finally does him in. Just couldn't let it go. I personally think the whole "Living In America" sequence is what doomed him. He put Drago on the spot in a humiliating way and you could just see him seething. I think after that he went at it harder than he might otherwise have. Should have just let Rocky take it. Rock's always been able to take a hit better. You heard Drago say as much, "It's like hitting an iron wall." As for the politics, the old Soviet Union always used sports as a tool of its propaganda apparatus. If you watch the movie "Miracle", it goes a bit more into that. This was at a time when US-Soviet relations were on a downturn. This came out in 1985, but it was made in 1984. In 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev became leader of the Soviet Union and that's when things started to turn around. And the scenes in Russia were filmed in Wyoming, known, along with Idaho, as the "American Siberia".
