It's true. There was a short documentary done in Spain talking about what happens with those who won the lottery. Most of the times they end up bankrupt, with debts, and cursing the day they won the money. Mind that in Spain, winning the lottery means you have to pay 45% of it in taxes, and many of those winners never knew. The only way to avoid that is if you prove that money was spent on first-hand necessities, like for example a house or a company (a company will already pay taxes, so using the money for that is considered an investment)

Often the people who buy lottery tickets are in the lower income bracket and if they win they suddenly have millions of dollars that they have no idea what to do with and no idea how to manage. They usually spend it all, wrack up enormous debts and wind up even worse off than they were to begin with.
