Let's watch along LONE SURVIVOR

Hello dear patrons,

Don't let the smile fool you: I've just chosen one of the pictures YouTube has given as an option until I create a thumbnail.

Besides the constant sadness in my heart, I was admiring the physical conditions of these soldiers and how impossible it would be for me to perform any of their training, not to mention the actual mission.

Stay safe! ๐Ÿ’–

Let's watch along LONE SURVIVOR

Comments

Woow, thank you so much for all the details! ๐Ÿค— It was my pleasure to read it and learn a few things

Also the Sunrise time- I was curious since I'm still getting used to how early early it gets bright in Seattle, being new here and further north than I've lived. Mid summer it starts getting pretty bright around 4:15 or so! I looked back at the scene, the clock says ~3:40! It seems a bit bright for then, but maybe not by as much as it seems esp since mountains make it more inconsistent. Nautical Twilight (sun below the horizon but enough light to see the horizon and a bit of the ground maybe) started ~3:30 in that part of Afghanistan, Civil Twilight (more like what the scene looks like to me, closer to sun rise and bright enough to see pretty well) around 4:05 and sun rise at 4:35.

From what I understand, the movie is pretty accurate. A few comments on some things you mentioned incase interested- Didn't ask that I heard, but -QRF=Quick Reaction Force (a group who don't go on the mission but prepare and stay ready to rush out and support the mission team if they run into problems). TIC=Troops In Contact (pretty self explanatory, soldiers in the area are under attack and need support. Generally gets air support and the QRF called out if possible, or requests for allies to help) The training and not being meant for it- Pretty much nobody is 'meant for it'! The part of training they show (real footage) clips from (I think they were all from "Hell Week"?) is specifically meant to find physical limits and is more about testing mental limits/commitment. By then in training, any of them should be physically capable, but still 3/4 of them quit (by ringing the bell they show in one clip). They get almost no sleep, little food, are kept cold and wet much of the time and constantly pushed. Team decision making- Seals "empower every man in the platoon to be a tactical leader, because sometimes even the junior man is in the best position to see the right tactical decision", meaning they expect even the lowest rank guy on a team to voice any disagreement or concerns with an idea while the decision is being made, but once the decision is made by whoever is in command they commit fully to the decision as made, agree or not. Dirt in wounds- It is actually a thing in some specific remote situations, yes. It's not ideal, there's definitely risk of infection if left there for long so the usual instruction even for wilderness aid is to wash the wound thoroughly to get rid of dirt/etc. For deep wounds, there is a powder that increases the speed of clotting that they probably would have used if hadn't lost the aid kit, along with a compression bandage. That said, in a desperate situation packing the wound with dirt can help if they expect to get to treatment before infection would be a bigger problem than bleeding to death. Packed in enough it might help provide a bit of pressure deep into a bad wound, but some recent research also showed soil in a wound can activate clotting factors in blood! Still, not something to generally consider since the risk of infection is usually much higher and other things like a bandage from clothing (and even a tourniquet if bad enough) are usually better. https://www.med.ubc.ca/news/soil-in-wounds-can-help-stem-deadly-bleeding/ The helicopter pilots deciding to go into the area even without their escorts is something probably only that special unit and ones like it would even consider. The Night Stalkers (160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment) are specially trained/the helicopter pilot equivalent of the Seals and they are the main pilots for missions American special operations teams are flow by. They are also the pilots in Black Hawk Down, if you end up watching that.
