Librium (no longer sold under that brand name, but still made as generic) was similar to Xanax but much longer acting. The whole class of drugs is now far more controlled than it was then, in the 60s they were unfortunately given out like candy. They are great medications for the right uses, but do have risk of addiction/dependence. The most common misuse by doctors was to prescribe them to housewives unhappy with their marriage instead of acknowledging the problem or bothering with counseling (and a time when divorce just wasn’t an option for women in an unhappy or abusive marriage), or women who were upset with things like not getting respect at work. There have been some.. bad periods in medical practice, especially around mental health, both because we weren’t totally aware of how risky some of the treatments were and just didn’t take so many things like anxiety, depression, and societal issues/discrimination etc seriously.

If you’re interested about the pills that she takes (since I am a doctor)… they are a made up drug name “xanzolam” but it matches almost exactly with the ‘tranquilizer’ (old term) Librium/chlordiazepoxide and the author has said he drew on experiences with friends who used it and similar meds. They are anti anxiety benzodiazepines drugs. Very useful and pretty safe when used properly but they were wildly overprescribed in the 60s, and yes even used in some orphanages apparently to keep the kids sedated and easier to manage. Overdoses can be pretty dangerous.. usually just some severe drowsiness but depending on the person and how bad the overdose some of the most common effects are below, and it can be fatal- -nervous system depression: act/thinking sluggish, and ranges from drowsiness to rarely coma -respiratory depression: slows breathing, can be so bad to the point of stopping breathing but that is rare ~10% of kids with overdoses -ataxia: in about 90% of child overdoses, difficulty speaking, balancing/walking, swallowing

It’s such a great series, though I was sure it came out before 2020… the last year has lasted about a decade I think. Really cool to see someone who actually knows chess (at least compared to my level) also! I enjoy it and have a nice set passed down from my mom, know the basics and little things like En Passant but never learned any of the openings/formal strategies. I’d probably be decent against someone else who doesn’t know anything formal but would be destroyed by a real opening, hah. I know enough to be familiar with the ideas of how she plays/tournaments but have to take anything at all specific for granted so really going to enjoy hearing your reaction!
