Well, on the most basic level, both define themselves from their first episodes as coming-of-age/hero's-journey stories.

2021-01-22 04:16:38 +0000 UTCIt was our first time seeing earth-bending, and we’ve seen the other three, so I can see why they wanted to do this here. Everyone keeps telling Aang that he has to learn all four bending disciplines, and he has to begin this journey of education so he can face the Fire Nation, but from a storytelling perspective, they want to give the audience at least a brief glimpse of all four elements before Aang focuses on mastering one. But, yes, I agree, it’s weaker than the episodes we’ve had. And, in part, yes, it was disappointing to go a whole episode without hearing the Fire Nation’s Dies Irae-derived four-note musical theme.

2021-01-21 10:38:26 +0000 UTCI agree that this is the weakest episode so far, though as you pointed out it’s still really entertaining. I knew you’d dig the puns! And I love that it gives Aang some kind of anchor to his past. Poor kid deserves it after finding out his entire culture got wiped out, and then the home of his past self getting burned down...he really needed something positive.
