I don’t if he heard that part, hopefully if he didn’t he’ll catch when he’s editing 😭

“Can you just be kissing me now” my heart😭❤️

Sarah McKinlay

Yay! I loved your reaction. :)

"Thank fuck something went right." Season 6 mood.

ME TOO with the spike/anya! The only good thing about WtWTa is spike and anya hanging out, and Giles singing.

I like that Anya was searching all episode for a way to punish Xander and make him hurt through supernatural means when all she had to do was sleep with spike.

I don't think it's right to "blame" the writers. In a highly emotionally charged situation like this, it's a normal human mechanism to grab the easiest emotional weapon at hand--consistency with one's own previous behavior be damned. Admirable? No. But certainly very human. So in that regard, I think this is actually very good writing.

Steve Maxey

I don’t think anyone misunderstands where Xander’s anger and confusion and passion in the moment comes from. It’s how it comes out/what he does with it. It’s his bigotry, judgement and hypocrisy people hate. Anya didn’t choose to be human, it was forced on her, and she’s actively tried to go back to being a demon multiple times (most recently succeeding). Her kill count of the last millennia is FAR steeper than Spike’s, and it’s not like she shows remorse for any of it since becoming human—to her, there’s nothing to be sorry about, she was a demon and it was her job. She actually reminisces quite fondly over her work. And THIS is the person Xander has chosen to have a relationship with and has been bangin for years (btw, I love Anya). He has ZERO room to judge her for sleeping with Spike based on who Spike is (a murderer who’s been forced into no longer murdering……that’s exactly who Anya is). At most, he can be upset over her sleeping with someone who he knows and has “worked with” the past few years. But that’s not what he makes it about. He makes it about this: “You let that evil, soulless thing touch you….I look at you, and I feel sick. Because you had sex with that.” It’s one of the ugliest parts of Xander’s personality. Not to mention, Xander’s treatment of Spike is also disgusting in this moment. Everyone knows Spike’s soulless and evil, and you can point out that episode a few back where he had some evil-y scheme….but you can’t do that while ignoring the entire rest of the season he’s been aiding the scoobies with no ulterior evil motive (including LAST episode). Throughout this time, and starting at the end of S5, Xander’s had countless interactions with Spike where he’s empathized with him and treated him as a “person” and not a “that”. The writer’s flip his bigotry on whenever they feel its convenient.

I don't hate Xander for having human emotions. I get angry at him for how he chooses to express those emotions sometimes, like here or in dead mans party. In relation to Buffy: he’s clearly not upset for Buffy’s sake or concern for her, he’s upset she slept with Spike while rejecting him. He’s tended to put Buffy on a pedestal, idealizing her, which makes it really hard for him to see what Buffy’s actually going through this season especially. His condescending anger comes out at Buffy anytime she doesn’t live up to his idealized views for her like here. I think this kind of disillusionment is necessary for him to actually see Buffy clearly. Xander’s own character arc is really interesting to me and the last few episodes were kind of the culmination of a lot of early seeds. In season 4 he was insecure about his self-worth, the three things that really helped him were his sense of being part of the gang that helps Buffy save the world, his growing relationship to Anya, and his stable job. It’s interesting that in the vision in Hells Bell, it’s the loss of Buffy and his role in her life’s mission that left him useless for both his Job and messed up [at least in part] his relationship with Anya. I think it shows how he still gets most of his self-worth from being that helper in Buffy’s life, without that the other two sources of self-worth fell apart. His self-worth relying on Buffy is also deeply connected to his idealization of her which is challenged in this episode. Where he’ll get his self-worth with a more realistic view of Buffy, and with his relationship with Anya fallen apart….is a great question. Truly the feeling after every good episode this season as aspects of a character’s issues unravel is “where do we go from here…” Anya’s got her own problems and arc….but this comment is already too long :)

A small thing towards the beginning of the episode that I wanna point out is Xander drinking beer alone in his apartment. Now, there's nothing wrong with that, I do that all the time, but as a symbol it's extremely sad because he's falling into his family's patterns of behavior. And it's ironic because what triggered the drinking was him trying not to fall into his family's patterns of behavior by breaking up with Anya. Xander wasn't ready to get married and I completely understand his mindset right now, but avoiding the issue isn't the way to avoid following the Harris family legacy. He wants to go back to the way things were pre-proposal, but he hasn't done any work to resolve his issues. He needs psychological help. But then again who doesn't, especially in this show. Also I'm way more into Spike/Anya than I should be. The only other inkling we've gotten of their chemistry was in Where the Wild Things Are.

KT

Also I feel like it’s an extreme double standard in this fandom because if it had been Xander running around trying to make a wish like that on Anya there would be absolute outcry but because most fans hate Xander it’s totally fine for Anya to do it?

Nichole Hutchison

I want to insert your comment into my comment to give it more weight lol

I actually struggle to feel sympathy for Anya, purely because she became a vengeance demon again. Had she not done that I would feel for her a lot more. I don’t care what Xander did, she chose to become a demon which means killing people again, that’s too far and not to mention her being a vengeance demon was the only reason that guy came to the wedding to show Xander fake visions in the first place. I also don’t like that Xander wanted to elope but Anya wanted the big white wedding, where is the comprise? He wanted that because he knew seeing his family would make it difficult for him to go through with it but that just got ignored. Also let’s not forget that they are very young here like 22? Most people aren’t ready for a huge commitment like that and they were only engaged for 7 months! That’s so fast, most people are engaged for a couple years. Everything just went too fast and zero comprise

Guess I'll be the one to defend Xander again... oh boy lol. I love Spike. He's probably my favorite character. But also. Spike... is a murderer. Not only is he a murderer, but he's tried to murder Xander, and Xander's closest friends, several times. He's not like Angel who got a soul, or Anya who became human. It doesn't really matter if Anya or Buffy are his girlfriend, ex girlfriend, buddy, close acquaintance... if anyone I know starts bangin murderers that tried to kill me, I'm probably not gonna feel too hot about that... Not just because it's clearly messed up, as the entire story has been screaming at us all season with Buffy and her feelings, but also because Buffy herself has told them all so many times that it was never going to happen. I know people are going to say it isn't his business. But, realistically, how is it not? These are the people that he sees every day. The closest people that he has, that share everything with each other... that would die for each other. The people that he trusts the most in the world... and 2 of them are having sex with a guy that spent years trying to kill them all. I just... I feel like confusion mixed with some anger is a pretty reasonable feeling. Let's remember for a second... 2 episodes ago, Spike was hatching demons that would kill people. He's has no soul. He's EVIL. Also... I'm not lookin for a fight lol I just gotta say I get where he's coming from. I don't think anyone else did anything wrong sexually. Buffy and Anya can do whatever they want. It's their lives, and their bodies... but Xander also has the right to be unhappy about it. That's part of being in relationships, platonic or romantic. Didn't Anya also just spend the whole episode trying to get his friends to accidentally kill him too?

Love this ep,so glad you did too Liam. I couldn't wait for you to see the Willow/Tara reunion since you knew it was bound to come, but didn't know it would be necessarily *this* ep. Glad they didn't drag it out any longer since there were only four more eps. Your reaction to Xander seeing Spike and Anya cracked me up. Willow, just close the laptop before Xander comes over girl!!! :) I love that whole confrontation scene with Spike,Xander,Anya(and Buffy). I am totally pro Anya and was cheering her on in the things she said, especially the "where do you get off judging me!" Oh those effing nerds. What the hell are they up to now? I still dislike them. Always wondered why Xander was walking to the Magic Shop, where's his car? I don't think it was that close by. Guess it was just for a dramatic effect that had him walking with the axe. I had seen bits and pieces of season six as it aired but was not a fan. I have to say, the next episode (19) was the ep that made me think, I really now want to watch the rest of the season and then go back and check the whole series out from the beginning. The obsession then started.

Val

I don’t get hating him for this. He’s a human and feels real human emotion like we all do, we can’t control emotions like jealousy even if we have no right to be jealous that doesn’t stop the green eyed monster appearing from time to time. Emotions like that can lead to dumb choices and actions. I don’t agree with Xander but I don’t get hating him for just being an average human

Nichole Hutchison

I loved this for Anya/Spike, the two outcasts. The way it unfolded became entirely unique unto itself, and quickly became not about Buffy/Xander or vengeance, but about Spike/Anya needing solace and connection with someone other than Buffy/Xander. It was a really private moment, and not one they knew was being broadcast to their former partners. I like their simple head nod acknowledgement at the end, kind of "this was all this is going to be, and thank you". I can't stand Xander's judgement of Anya, nor Buffy's jibe at Spike "didn't take long, did it". I'm ready to skip to the next season now lol

SpikesEcho

- This episode I feel gets overlooked a lot because it's so character-focused and there's not really much of a plot, but I think it's a good "deep breath" before we plunge into the end of the season. - I guess they probably just wanted to have a reason for Buffy to have another scene with Spike, but it does seem ridiculous that Buffy doesn't immediately suspect the nerds are behind the hidden cameras. - On the one hand, I like that they don't lean too much on the Spike/Cecily thing, but on the other hand, it seems odd that they don't even acknowledge each other when Spike walks into the Magic Box. Like, not even a look or a nod. Especially given what Spike is experiencing at the moment. - I really *love* the build-up to everyone seeing Spike and Anya, because you *absolutely* should see it coming a mile away and they do a great job of exploiting how awkward and uncomfortable it is. And I like the way Willow and especially Dawn are able to put two and two together with Buffy's reaction. I think Buffy is more hurt than she expected to be, because yeah, she's been telling Spike to get over it but there's a part of her that kind of doesn't want him to. Buffy running after Xander is a telling moment, because it's not about protecting Xander (who Spike can't hurt). - Such a great ending and a much needed bright spot after all that pain.

Pam Nail

I love right at the end when Spike starts to say 'I wish', and Anya says 'don't'. The acting in that scene is so subtle but it speaks volumes.

Claire Eyles

I keep rewatching the ending. That scene is EVERYTHING. Like when you were almost to that point my heart started pounding. I've seen it soooo many times and it still always hits me so hard because I love them so much. You were right, we definitely needed that ending after what happened with everyone else in the episode.

Jenn Rose

I still get mad everytime I watch this episode. Who the fuck does Xander think he is judging anyone for their choices? Let alone Anya? She can do whatever she wants with whomever she likes. He's always been my least favorite of the Scoobies, but episodes like this one make me actively hate him. Anya reading Xander to filth was my favorite moment of the episode.. other than Willow and Tara kissing!

4Tom4lepus4

I was gardening and now I’m all late to the party 😂

CeNedra

I cry every time at that. I paraphrased that speech to a significant other of mine after they had really upset me and we took a 'break'.

SweetSummit

Can’t wait to watch it ❤️

Stephen Mintac

Liam + Buffy notification = big smile on my face. Can't wait to see your reaction. *that ending*

Laura Navarro Díaz

"Can we just skip it? Can you just be kissing me now" <--- That breaks me, but in a happy way.

Amazing reaction! I really enjoyed it <3 I love that you loved this episode, so do I! It's actually one of my favourites. Some really great thoughts there at the end, too <3

I can honestly tell you, I completely forgot what this episode was about apart from 2 massive things, which was the Anya/Spike thing and the Willow and Tara reunion. So that probably tells you enough of the impact it left on me. So close to nearing the end of this season now. Time flies by.

s jaco

I literally just got home as this was posted, perfect timing! 😊 So excited!
