Angel - 3x05 “Fredless” FULL REACTION

Comments

It's says a lot about the Buffyverse that we and the characters immediately suspect the parents to be bad. We don't know if Gunn's parents abandoned him or died, but we do know that Gunn and his sister were implied to be orphans since they were very young. Cordelia's parents abandoned her. Wesley's admission was horrifying. Fred may be the only Buffyverse character so far with loving, supportive, open-minded parents. I was annoyed that AI had lived with Fred for months and couldn't come up with anything about Fred but tacos. At least Angel has an excuse for being gone for three of those months, so the office scene of them missing her was touching.

I thought that the lesson that Lorne learned was that he needed to go back to realize that he didn't need to go back. In other words, Lorne did need to address his demons and get closure to move on. My head canon is that because Lorne sets people on their path, he saw Fred's path and set her on it on his usual vague way.

I love the daddy issues circle jerk after Fred leaves XD

This episode reminds me so much of Family, the Tara centric season 5 episode of Buffy. I love both episodes so much. The last scene in the Magic Box, and this last scene in Fred’s room. Gotta love Fred’s parents. Perfect casting.

Liam- Are you ever, or often surprised at how much of yourself you are comfortable enough to share with us?

Mark Judge

Lorne's advice was also a misdirect but I think it really makes sense in context when you think about it. "Those old monsters" def refer to her metaphorical demons and trauma and not her parents. Plus Lorne was very keen on never confronting his issues with his parents, and the lesson he learned in Pylea was that he never actually needed to go back. So it makes more sense for him to tell her to keep running than to face her fear. Also I just love how the only fucks Lorne gives in this episode are about Fred.

My problem here is that this does two things I don't like--ship-shilling (I hate Cangel, anyway, but in general, I hate the "OMG you WILL support this ship!" thing... that was my main problem with Biley) and character-shilling (FRED IS AWESOME AND EVERYONE LOVES HER AND WILL TELL YOU ABOUT IT... AND TELL YOU.... AND TELL YOU...) And yet, I like this episode. Just because Amy Acker is so damned charming.

Obviously Liam didn't take my recommendation for holding off on viewing the main credits until after he watched this episode. But for those who wondered about the thought process behind it, here goes. Knowing that Liam prefers not to see any spoilery scenes in the opening credits ahead of when they occur in the show meant that Liam's first viewing of the main credits would likely be this episode. The group shot of Fred and everbody that features prominently in the opening credits is from the end of the previous episode. Next, while it's not unprecedented for main cast to depart the show midseason in a Joss Whedon show, it might be a little weird first discovering Amy Acker is main cast in the same ep where they tease her departure. I considered the effect of that coincidence and how it might affect Liam buying into Fred's apparent choice to leave the group/show. That was my reasoning. Obviously he didn't follow my suggestion and as usual his reaction was awesome and that's the important part.

Was watching to see if you'd comment on Phil Coulson's cellist hugging Deathlok in this episode. But luckily, you were so engrossed in Fred's story, you appear to have completely missed that Whedon'verse-ism.

Fred's meltdown always makes me emotional. Fred is the reason why I went on to watch other shows with Amy Acker, she's such a phenomenal actor, and you being in love with Fred is 100% understandable. Fred is the cutest cinnamonroll in existence <3

It's working fine for me :O

I love this episode so much, and I'd forgotten how dark it got with Fred's meltdown at the bus station (Amy Acker is INCREDIBLE). I'm so glad she's found her place on the team. Also, frankly, it's nice to have another woman in the group.

Pam Nail

Ooh, I didn't know it was co-written by Joss Whedon. Thanks for the tidbit of infos. Now I get the joke, since I hadn't seen the movie lol :)

Amanda S

That's what I always assumed too. I don't think I ever considered anything else actually...

Great episode. They've got a dangerous job and the others have made their choices to be there. It's important for Fred not to keep going where others take/send her but to make her own decisions about her future both short term and long. As Amanda S said, the Berkle debate was whether or not they should call the police on the weird people who claimed Fred was okay but seemed to be giving them the run-a-round. Some wall breaking in the episode with Cordelia desperately wanting to know what happened between Angel and Buffy – which was exactly what the fans wanted to know. And the crack about “that last” Alien movie was a reference to “Alien: Resurrection,” co-written by Joss Whedon.

As for that whole "is it time" "not yet" thing the parents did... I know they were trying to misdirect us into thinking the parents might be evil, but after learning the truth I try to justify the line to myself as if the parents were thinking all the people at Angel Investigations were acting pretty sketchy... so they were discussing calling the cops. Like, "is it time (to call the police)" "not yet"... Because the parents did mention later on that they were thinking about calling the police on them.

Amanda S

I'm honestly so happy that they chose to highlight the trauma that Fred went through for five whole years. Sure, we've gotten the endearing side of who she is now. But she had to go through absolute Hell to end up being who she is today. God, I love Fred.

Ritchie

Cordelia at Angel's goofiness: "Dork..." Me, happily consuming any and all tiny Cangel crumbs left out for me: "Finally, some good fucking food."

Ritchie

This episode made me officially love Fred

Sarah McKinlay

I'm not sure I'm ready to watch this reaction yet. Hot take: this episode fucked me up harder than The Body did.

Pudungurte

Aaaand as of this episode Fred is my cinnamon roll. 💜 I love her the way you love Willow. 10/10 would die for.
