Buffy the Vampire Slayer - 6x04 “Flooded” FULL REACTION

Comments

I hear that Joss has said that the nerds are not the Big Bad, that life itself is. The way everything just keeps piling on Buffy, normal things that, for her, because of the slaying, are so much worse because there's no way she can handle it with a job like that. The nerds just make it all worse. That';s why I think it's great that the "villains" are human. They are normal and real, just like life.

Raven Dark

I came here to see the full WIllow/Giles fight. The scene was great on YouTube, but the full scene is even greater!!

ronaldsf aka The Rules Lawyer

Season 6 first half really hits home actually for me especially after my mother passed away. I mean everything Buffy is dealing with, minus the real life monsters of course, was pretty much what I had to deal with being an only child and father-less.

Stephen Mintac

"Hired out to a sweatshop, what *have* you been reading?" :P

SweetSummit

Well it was Warren's idea. And Jonathan isn't exactly particularly forceful as a person. Nor is what we've seen from Andrew so far. It's like "yeah okay", but it's not like they're totally on board. They're boarding the train without a ticket so far.

SweetSummit

Pretty much the only reason I was looking forward to this reaction.

SweetSummit

Not a favorite episode, but the scene between Willow and Giles alone makes it worth having watched every time.

Steve Maxey

Bahahaha your face during that Willow Giles fight :D yeah, there are definitely a lot of tensions in the group this season, more so than ever before! I'm not a fan of the money issue thing. Like, the Council is paying Giles but not the ACTUAL SLAYER? Heck, even the Scoobie Gang should get paid by them for helping Buffy!

4Tom4lepus4

The difference is the Slayer doesn’t have a choice, it’s who she is. It’s not a job, it’s her identity. Angel does what he does by choice. And even he doesn’t charge the people he helps when it’s a Power That Be related mission (with few exceptions).

Vicky N

I wish they had included a brief flashback of the flying monkies at the school play!

Richard Lucas

Interesting episode. For me the characters are the meat of the stories and character driven things are my favorite, which is what we get a lot of here.

There's nothing in the text of the show that says Willow and Tara are not paying a share of the expenses. The house is still theirs, no one is starving and Dawn hasn't been hired out to a sweatshop. Yet. But the daily expenses soon get dwarfed by the monthly expenses and the annual (or semi-annual) expenses and the bills just keep coming. It's a part of life that Buffy was returned too. Aside from what the watchers have said about themselves, in what way have we seen them be “good”? For centuries the Watcher's Council worked by taking young, potential slayers out of their homes and raising them like they did Kendra. She didn't have to learn much about getting by in the human world because she was meant to hunt and kill demons. Alone, guided and 'cared for' by her watcher. Buffy is an anomaly and centuries-old traditional thinking doesn't like, or like to think about, anomalies. That produces some major irony when Giles gives Buffy the pep talk about handling real life issues. If the watchers had had their way, Buffy would probably have grown up like Kendra and spent all her time learning to be a better slayer without learning about real life stuff.

Here's what I've always thought about the money/living situation thing. We know the majority of Joyce's life insurance went towards outstanding medical bills from her illness. When Buffy died (only months after Joyce died, so she probably hadn't wrapped her head around the finances yet), Willow and Tara took over parenting Dawn (a very complex situation given everyone involved is grieving) and their share of slaying duties. Yes, they moved in to do that, but I can only imagine they were having to financially contribute significantly (probably via their student loans) to the house, bills, and Dawn's upkeep- there is no indication otherwise here.... On another note it is scandalous that Watchers get salaries but not Slayers. I think we're supposed to believe that most Slayers don't tend to live much of an adult life, or set up an independent household. The underlying ick of the Council's attitude towards Slayers certainly extends to the financial exploitation of these young women.

As I get older, I appreciate this season more. When I was younger, I was privileged enough to have gripes with how they handled it. That it seemed unrealistic for Buffy to deal with what she was dealing with on top of her trauma. But it’s realistic to me now more than ever. When it rains, it can fucking poor.

Overall, this episode isn't one of my favorites, even though it does have a few of my favorite moments and lines -- particularly the Willow vs Giles scene, and Giles cupping Buffy's cheek and admitting he's always thought her to be a miracle. (Gut me, why don't you. 😭😍) But one of the things I do like about it in the general sense is that it really addresses how difficult some of the normal-human concerns would be for a Slayer - who, for all intents and purposes, has a 24/7 job already - to deal with. Great reaction! V much looking forward to the rest of S6!

Bixgirl1

Thanks so much!! A great episode and reaction. :) I appreciate it.

Grace

You always have great reactions but I'm esp loving season 6. I forgot how solid all of the Giles scenes in this ep are, the ones between him and Buffy esp are so well done. SMG is doing such a marvelous job (as always), in that (1) we can see her pain right beneath the surface, (2) she's still putting up a decent front for everyone (and slightly different fronts for different people), but (3) that front isn't quite convincing enough to make everyone stop worrying about her. Everyone is doing a great job.

KT

and, for me, and the way I interpret it, yes, the 3 have no defined reason, other than they are 3 guys with seemingly high iq's, that while playing D&D, decided, what the heck, yeah, lets take over Sunnydale

Mark Judge

That was a v good joke

KT

I joked with my mom recently saying that I wish there was a Tinder for friends. I need folks to do things with occasionally, but I'm not ready for the commitment! lol Perhaps this is why I watch so many reactors myself!

Miss Timi Fantastico

Thats' what I'm saying! Why didn't any one point out that Angel charges!

Miss Timi Fantastico

Im only party way through, but it always struck me odd that after Anya suggested charging people no one said "That what Angel does." They all acted so shocked, but Angel investigations has offered their services for hire for ages! I really would have loved to see a discussion about that. Willow and tara could have offered protection spells or something!

Miss Timi Fantastico

Willow was amazing. She did what she had to do. Don't @ me!

Moon Logic

I just realized something. I watch a lot of reaction videos on youtube, and maybe, for an introvert, this is an appealing thing because it allows you to share an experience with another person, in a way, but also allows you to have all of the control so it is appealing because it is more manageable. No, it isn't the same, so not nearly as beneficial, but still something, I think.

Mark Judge

This is one of the episodes that really makes me hate how the Scoobies treat Anya. There has never been any hostility with any other romantic partners of the gang. Glad for Anya for sticking up for herself though, and not settling for Xander's excuses. That poor girl is handing out this free financial advise and yall gon' clown on her. The disrespect. Great episode though love the Willow and Giles scene.

Valkyrie

I've been waiting all day to get home so I could watch this. So excited! 😁

Jenn Rose

I've always wondered why the Council doesn't just pay the slayer a salary, like they pay the watchers a salary. It would free her up for more slayage. (Of course, the real reason is that symbolically, we're dealing with the demons of young adulthood, one of which is that you discover things cost money, and money is hard to get when you have to worry about necessities that parents took care of before. But still. The logic is weird.)

Good observations. That's why I read comments! :)

I was thinking about this too. Here's where my thoughts went. At least one of the following things is true. 1. The entire gang has already contributed financially, particularly Tara and Willow since they live in the house. 2. This was an uncomfortably large writing error. Either one of those things explains the situation to my satisfaction. In my head-canon, Tara and Willow have already paid rent, and then increased their rent... just to help feed Dawn and pay for her basics like school supplies, fees, etc. Also to pay property tax, and utilities... any other miscellaneous stuff.

UTU49

I don't know if this is just me having seen Buffy a bigillion times, but I find this episode to be awfully quotable. Especially the first two-thirds, I was talking along with almost every line. I do also have a travel mug that says, M'Fashnik like Mmm Cookies on it.

Katherine Thoreson

The app is not all that great, so don't feel too bad. I can never figure out how to reply to someone's comment on my phone. And I hope you get to feeling better.

Katherine Thoreson

Great to see you back with more Buffy, Liam! And great reaction as always - so astute! I’m always mad by the finance scene at the house. Everyone just staring at buffy, dumping all that on her. Why havent they done anything about the money if they knew it was becoming an issue?! Grrr!

Holi117

Just got home from work and you've posted a Buffy reaction!! Thank you xx 😘

CeNedra

The Willow/Giles scene is the highlight of this ep for me. That's what I was really waiting for you to see Liam. Loved the look on your face when hearing some of those lines. I loved "you rank, arrogant amateur!." Go Giles!! Willow was a little scary there telling him not to piss her off. Whoa Willow! You are not the same girl from even last season. I would have liked to know what went on during the summer after Buffy died and how she has changed so much and got so confident. Tara seems more confident too (but in a good way) and not that super shy girl anymore. Did you the look Giles gave Willow when she mentioned she could do a locator spell? She backed off pretty fast. I do not like those three guys if they are going to be the big bad. I did not like Warren right from his first appearance in last season I Was Made to Love You when he made a love robot for himself. Ew. I haven't seen this ep from beginning to end in a long while, so I didn't remember Jonathon speaking up and saying Buffy saved his life a couple of times, But then he writes on the board, "hypnotize Buffy." What the hell Jonathan?! I did love when Warren called him Whine-athon. :) Liam- I do like that you are enjoying this season so far and the theme of life stuff happenings. As you can see already, it's a very different season than the rest. I know some fans were not big on it, but others were. Good pun on the "loan shark." For some reason that just made me laugh a lot. :) Just as sidenote- if you go back and watch again, check out Amber Benson's face when they are in the Magic Box and Dawn look at the pic of the demon in the book and says, "that's a weird place for a horn...that's not a horn." Amber is definitely holding back a laugh.

Val

You made me spit out my food singing Heart xD

Eliza

At least Dawn is trying to help by randomly stealing items from Giles and Anya... she's the robin hood of this story.

Bisibia

The way everyone treats Buffy pisses me off so much. So she had to drop out of college because of her mother's unexpected death, and has no time to work because of being the Slayer, and everyone is just looking at her like, "Oh, why don't you have enough money to keep up an entire household including a teenage sister you are now responsible for? 🤔" Giles has received a salary for years, not only from the school district for being the librarian, but from the Watchers' Council as well. Buffy has gotten *nothing*. And why do Willow and Tara think it's ok to live in Buffy's house without paying rent or helping with the bills? I mean, did they only bring her back to life so that neither of them would have to get jobs?? Sorry, I have a lot of feelings about this 😂

Kristin Carter

Yup, it's the first time we see Andrew. The actor who plays him, though, had already appeared in a season 5 episode. See if you can spot him! :) (And yes, I'm aware most people here already know what I'm talking about)

Khanach

What strikes me now about this episode all these years later is the theme of evading responsibility that most of the characters are engaging in to differing degrees. Xander has proposed to Anya, but now he's hesitating about taking the steps to make that real. As you mentioned, Buffy takes off to see Angel in part because she's putting off further discussions about her finances. Willow does not want to think about potential repercussions of the spell that brought Buffy back, and Andrew, Jonathan and Warren are basically refusing to accept any adult responsibility at all right now.

They were actually going to get Tucker back but the actor was not available, so they created his brother Andrew. :)

Jarrod Wild

Hi all. I'm in the bath with a sore stomach. I finally figured out how to navigate this site on my phone. God, I'm dumb sometimes. Thx, Liam for keeping me company while I'm in the tub. TMI!! TMI!!

For some reason I noticed the Homer shirt during Jonathan's evil speech and it was definitely a mood.

Dipper

Liam I love that Homer shirt.
