Angel - 1x20 "War Zone" FULL REACTION

When Angel ran through the hallway dodging darts or stakes, I said, "What is this Indiana Jones?" right before Liam asked, "What is this, Skyrim?" I don't know how to feel about that.

I like that Angel continues to do world-building -- we get socially awkward billionaire David Nabbit (blah), street kids fighting vampires (and doing it pretty well), wealth disparity and gentrification, demon brothels patronized by humans (ick). Angel as superhero getting subverted by needing to be rescued from a meat locker that some kids locked him in always makes me smile. OTOH, Angel had some badass moments: when he casually stepped to the side so the vamp above fell flat on the floor; when he caught that metal (what?) arrow to save Alonna; “Name’s Angelus. And I wasn’t talking to you.” I love it when Angel invokes the name Angelus to strike fear into others. But my favorite moment was the final scene when I thoroughly expected Angel to go all white savior on Gunn but instead said that HE might need Gunn’s help one day. Smoothest of smooth moves.

Wtf I made the "maybe they just want to talk about their lord and savior jesus christ" joke right before you did. The actress who plays Alana wasn't great, and a lot of the dialogue was pretty stiff. The scenes between Angel and Gunn were more effective for me than the scenes between Alana and Gunn. I'm more into the ideas in this episode, like the ways in which massive wealth inequality inevitably changes how one interacts with the supernatural world.

Part of me wants to see Cordelia settle into a new life as David Nabbit’s stunning trophy wife but I respect her making the more conscientious decision. As for the new vampire killer in town (well, new to Angel anyway) he had a cool truck and I like this non-super powered warrior for justice. Never a bad idea to have more good guys around. And doing it without the help of magic or super-strength just makes him seem more courageous.
