Took me a bit to watch this reaction because I really dont like it. Honestly it could have been fixed by one alteration having the men that are still effected by the "energy" still be able to control themselves if they want to. That my idea anyway. I just hate the portrayal of women and men in this. Or heck even have just the controlling spinal thing without the hormones and have the burned up people either be an intinictual defense mechanism or the bad guys killing people who try to help the women. Again I dont know but You were still enjoyable so that's some silver lining.💜

2019-07-28 23:28:34 +0000 UTCI think this is a sloppy and borderline offensive attempt to comment on FGM (men controlling women's sexuality by cutting off their clitoris, which still happens to millions of women worldwide). Unfortunately, Whedon struggles to talk about women's issues without objectifying and over-sexualising every female in sight at the same time. He is deeply committed to the whole "super hot sexy women fight back while still being hot and turning men on" thing. Bonus points for implying that women's sexuality renders men barely able to control themselves as well...definitely not a dangerous myth at all (I am a huge Buffyverse fan, so this isn't coming from a "hater"...but Joss in infamously tone-deaf in his approach to these kinds of issues. Bit of a tw*t, really)

2019-07-16 18:11:32 +0000 UTCThis and the previous ep are the 2 worst eps Angel season 1 has to offer. It's uphill from here. Angel the series took a bit to realize it needs to tread more lightly with specifically female issues than Buffy does, as Angel has a male protagonist and one female main character (granted it's out of 3). They def could have fucked this up in Buffy too, but at least it would be sitting in an overall feminist context. I appreciate the attempt more with She, since demon/alien pregnancy is covered plenty in science fiction and fantasy. But I enjoy watching Expecting more for some reason.

2019-07-14 22:02:45 +0000 UTCI still think it's satire. Or at least a satirical story about FGM told in the middle of a straight-up detective story for some reason.

2019-07-12 04:50:42 +0000 UTCI believe this episode was meant to be a fictional world parallel to the very real life issue of female genital mutilation. I definitely applaud the show for attempting to tackle an issue like this, and of course as others have mentioned a Sci-Fi/Fantasy show, especially at the time it was made, is one of the best ways to bring subjects like this into the public conscience. I do think though that this episode, and others in the current Buffy/Angelverse have suffered from both sudden loss of actors & the need for rather rapid re-writes. I know with Buffy there was a much longer, and more interesting arc with Oz, Willow & Veruca, that ended up being cut down to a far too convenient feeling plotline that was done in one episode due to Seth Green leaving, and I think with some of the Angel episodes the same was true of the effect of Glenn Quinn's untimely departure.

2019-07-12 03:50:23 +0000 UTCThis episode is many fan’s least favorite episode of Angel, but look at all it gives us: 1) Wesley’s humorous dancing; 2) David’s brilliant comedy dancing; 3) the stunningly brilliant scene by David in the art gallery; 4) Wesley being so funny in the nursery; 5) the chemistry between David and Bai Lee, which I thought worked; 6) Wesley joining the team!; and 7) a (barely disguised) shocking episode about female circumcision! The show was way ahead of its time on this, and that topic back then could have only been done in a science-fiction format, the same way the original Star Trek tackled racism and other subjects the network would have restricted otherwise. Watching this episode again gave me a lot more appreciation for it. Thank you for your reactions Liam.

2019-07-11 23:04:49 +0000 UTCYeah, this gets my vote for the worst episode in the Buffyverse

2019-07-11 23:00:04 +0000 UTCAs you mentioned, the last episode (Expecting) was -- um -- interesting. Here is another episode that is -- um -- interesting.

2019-07-11 22:55:35 +0000 UTCOoof, this is a rough one. Definitely has my vote for the worst of the series. At least I Fall to Pieces felt like an Angel episode, this one took itself way to seriously and was just boring... and weird.
2019-07-11 22:54:24 +0000 UTCi know alot of people don't like this episode but I do so to each there own

2019-07-11 22:48:32 +0000 UTCI was both excited and dreading this one. I think the first 5-10 minutes of this episode is brilliant but unfortunately it goes downhill very quickly after that. I think it might be my worst of the whole series which is a pity since the dancing scene was so iconic

2019-07-11 22:35:56 +0000 UTCExtremely boring episode only worth remembering for Angel dancing. It's frustrating, because the subject matter deserves so much more.
