Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season 2 Review

What you said about Snider: "I want him to be devoured by human-hyena hybrids." Would you accept a giant snake as a substitute? LMAO Not spoiler, guys, he's up to season 6. I love it, and it's super freaky how close you were. Great review.

It's really cool to go through your old Buffy reactions on YouTube, you know? I'm in the beginning third of Season 2 and it's really sticking out for me how vile Cordelia was back then! I really admire the show that they were able to create such a horrible character with seemingly no redeeming features at all and then despite ourselves, over time we started to like her and get angry at people who hurt her. Seeing you go thorugh that process is really interesting. And you fought it at first, like I did!

Starting with season 4 (and season 1 of Angel) they shot for 16:9 but aired Buffy in 4:3, making those transfers far less likely to be mucked up (they actually started airing Buffy in 16:9 in some regions outside the US). The HD transfer of seasons 1-3 however are riddled with problems. Joss has always said that *every* episode of Buffy should be seen in 4:3 regardless, with the exception of OMWF.

Please stick with whatever method you're using to watch Buffy now and don't get fooled into watching the bad HD versions just released on Facebook Watch. These are the same flawed HD transfers people were complaining about a couple of years ago--overbright and pinkish throughout with too much digital smoothing (especially of skin tones), poor replacement special effects (or jarring upscaled ones), and missing important post-production filtering (so some night scenes that were shot during the day look like day, and other similar problems, like missing the golden filter on the very first Buffy shots in season 3, episode 1). Also, they were shooting for 4:3 aspect ratio and didn't protect the frame for 16:9, so the reframed shots reveal lights, light stands, cameras, crew members and sometimes cast members who were supposed to be offscreen or partially offscreen). In other words, though it's HD instead of SD, it's a vastly inferior viewing experience because Fox didn't invest the time or resources to do it right for Buffy like they did for X-Files.

Great review! Love that you took the time to really break things down and give thoughtful, in-depth analysis. Hour and a half not too long at all!

Ookla

You give such insightful and well thought out commentary that the hour and a half goes by quickly. Take as much time as you need 😊

I'm torn between what I love more... your thoughtful insights, or your adorable reactions. But seriously, great video ❀

That's too spoilery, IMO, Fern.

I've been watching your videos on YouTube for a while (Firefly and Buffy mainly but I'm a fan of a lot of the shows you watch) but this review spurred me to become a patron over here. You are just amazing with these analysis and the love for the show. I watched the full 90 odd minutes throughout my day today as I had downtime and it made my day wonderful. Thank you!!! πŸ˜πŸ€“ Can't wait to see your reactions to season 3!!! πŸ‘

I think you hit the nail on the head that James owns the accent so well and keeps it consistent that it works and has never really bothered me. He certainly nails the dry wit that comes with the accent just as Anthony does. I have a few lecturers who sound a lot like Giles so there's a certain amount of credibility to it. And that is quite a debut for James πŸ˜‚

Wow. One of the best commentaries I've ever seen. I was really interested in seeing what episode was the turning point for you (Innocence). For some, it's as early as Prophecy Girl and for others it's as late as Becoming Part II, but I don't think anyone escapes season 2 without becoming hooked and seeing a glimpse of what this show can do. So excited to go on this journey with you. Can't wait to start season 3!

So one thing I've wanted you, as a British viewer and as an aspiring actor, to comment on during season 2 that I haven't seen is James Marsters' accent. Random online reading I've done has indicated that most British viewers find it pretty good, despite occasional mispronunciations, and at least consistent, and that he "owns" it well enough to be able to act through it. Marsters admits he got a lot of help during season 2 from Anthony Stewart Head, whose native accent is closer to Spike's than the Received Pronunciation that Giles uses. And indeed, how good is *he* at at maintaining a consistent accent that is not his own (though if I recall, he did let a bit of his own accent bleed through in "The Dark Age" in the flashbacks and when talking to Ethan. So how about it: Were you ever distracted out of the story by thinking "Marsters: Bloody American trying to fake a British accent" or "Giles: You're not as upper class as you like to make yourself sound"? BTW: I met the casting director who cast Marsters in his first paid professional job, a story she loves to tell. In it, he played Prince Ferdinand in a production of "The Tempest" on the Goodman Theatre stage in Chicago. His first entrance he was rolled onstage tied naked to a huge wooden wheel.

I can see and kind of agree with your list. The episodes are always shifting depending on my mood. Lol I love that Buffy seems to be apart of you like it is for me. I cant wait to see you and season 3 meet. I love how you like Xander because yes he's flawed but I love him too.

Catherine Thurmond

Thank you so much. That was awesome. I could listen to you talk all night. You are so insigtful and such a sweetheart. I am also really happy that you appreciate Xander even with all his shortcomings. I've always loved Xander. It's probably why we both enjoyed Go Fish and Inca Mummy Girl. Once last thing, as much as I want to see you more and it is a little torturous waiting for the next one, don't go through Buffy and Angel too fast. There will be other shows but I definitely don't want Buffy and Angel to be over too soon.

Lostmyshoe22

I think I read that they were originally planning to kill Oz instead of Jenny, which may explain why they didn't plan a lot with him later on.

FernWithy

I’m always so impressed by how well you understand the characters and how quickly you pick up subtext and themes. I was most definitely not nearly as clever when I was watching the show for the first time. Super excited for season 3!

Pudungurte

An hour and a half?!? LOL Alright, I'm in for the ride :) Haven't watched yet, but looking forward to your thoughts on all of this.
