I always assumed that John Connor's original father was supposed to be the guy that Sarah was supposed to go out with that night but couldn't make it. In the original timeline their relationship gets to the point that he gets her pregnant and as Kyle later says "I know he dies before the war" so its very possible her potential boyfriend IS John's original father before Kyle came along.
