Just give it time, episode themes aren't just one episode

Robin Crow

Take a baby to the river Kyle William, they called him Wash the baby in the water Take away little Kyle's sin In a whitewashed shotgun shack An old man passes away Take the body to the graveyard Over him, they pray Lord, won't you tell us Tell us, what does it mean? At the end of every hard-earned day People find some reason to believe A good episode, with some lackluster flashbacks. We got a big death; this isn’t Scott/Steve getting mangled by Ethan or even Ethan himself getting ventilated by Charlie, this is a regular dying in agony over the course of about fifty minutes. Poor Boone, who really did just take a series of Ls in his life. Can’t say he was my favourite character, but it does feel a bit like lost potential to kill him off so swiftly, especially since I started getting invested in him when he became Locke’s disciple. I don’t think Locke was ever using Boone intentionally or manipulating him; when they first teamed up, it was Boone who volunteered to go with Locke to hunt Ethan and when they lost the trail, it was Boone who repeatedly insisted on sticking with Locke. Then they found the Hatch together, and there it is. I’m willing to forgive the more cliché aspects of this episode, like the birth/death juxtaposition or Jack’s boring, cringey ‘you fixed me’ speech because it does such a good job of piling on the bad stuff. We see Jack trying to save Boone, but one thing after another doesn’t get him anywhere. It’s doomed from the start, and we’re just watching Jack catch up to that while the world turns to chaos around him, with Claire and Boone and Locke going missing when he could be providing crucial information. It builds that atmosphere of stress very well. I kind of wish he’d left Sarah at the altar, much as I like seeing a pre-Modern Family Julie Bowen. And holy god, she looks great and she looks great today, whatever she’s doing is working because she has been solid dynamite since Happy Gilmore. I actually felt like she would fit better with Jack’s best man (Marc, who we last saw getting beaten up as a kid in Jack’s flashback) since she has a sense of humor that doesn’t seem to gel with the more dour, serious Jack. I think what I take away from the events of this episode is that Jack views commitment as vitally important to who he is, perhaps as a way to differentiate himself from his unreliable father. The problem is, he confuses commitment with love and fails to see that he’s making everyone miserable including himself. It happened with Boone, who had to claw his way out of near-death to say ‘hey, Jack, I’m dying, please don’t cut off my leg when I’m already in massive pain’. I think Shannon does or did just love Boone as a brother. When they slept together, she was drunk and in pain and the onus was somewhat on Boone as the sober one to, y’know, NOT fuck his sister. Also, why did Kate have to deliver the baby? I get Jin not delivering, language barrier, but Charlie was right there and he seemed down for it at one point. Hell, work together, guys. Why are you out by a tree with Jin, Charlie? Hold Claire’s hand or something, you idiot.

In the 90's when GRRM wrote the book he did that to invert one trope in the heroes journey. Then he continued because often when stories would kill off a character they did it to prove the stakes and then everyone was more or less safe (eg Star Trek TNG season 1).

The Testimony of Mushroom

The way I understand it, Jack not being able to write his vows connected with his problem with letting go because he was afraid that he might not be able to keep any vow that he did write. I don't think Jack is mad at Locke for pressuring Boone to go in the plane. He doesn't know the context of that. Jack is mad because Locke lied about how Boone got injured which led Jack to do the wrong procedure when trying to help him.

Lime Pie

I know you noticed there are 25 episodes in the season but the finale is broken up into 3 episodes. Just wanted to give a heads up in case you didn’t notice yet!

so killing off important characters in the first season wasn't invented by Game of Thrones. How interesting.

Minister Kosh

"Don't tell me what I can't do" - Jack saying the same thing Locke has been saying for a while. One a man of science, the other a man of faith.

If you give a blood transfusion with an incompatible blood type the immune system will think its an invader and target the blood, popping the red blood cells and releasing bad stuff into the blood stream that can shut down your kidneys and create clots, both of which can kill you if not treated quickly. Blood transfusions are one of the most legally regulated thing in medicine, requiring multiple forms and team double checks because it has deadly consequences, especially if not treated immediately. Needless to say doing it on an abandoned island is a risky procedure.

Gene Parmesan

In the early episodes when Jack was speaking with Rose on the beach he tells her he was once married but that his wedding ring was now rattling around in his bedside draw Also I took him saying he's scared to let go as meaning he has fear of commitment because he's scared of failing like his dad told him. So he's scared he can't let go of that feelin, scared of failing his marriage or Sarah herself

Tyler

Since you intentionally asked for help about Jack's flashback, and I don't think a response would have significant spoiling power here, I'm pleased to let you know: No, you didn't misread anything.

i 100% thought we were gonna see Jack leave her at the alter in the flashback. and rip Boone. seeing Jack go tell Shannon at the end made me tear up 😢
