Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 7x21 Full Reaction

I loved how you teared up to Buffy and Angel being back together in that moment. You said it all well. I understand how you weren't a Bangel fan in the beginning, their interactions were very simple and Angel's character as well was very one note even vague and it wasn't until Angel aired that we started getting a fleshed out character arc and thus getting a sense and closeness that you never could have before. Then combined having followed Buffy and her character's journey since last they were up until this moment shined a light on what their relationship had always been, but was not fully understood by us the viewers until now fittingly coming full circle.

The weirdness of this episode is that everyone quit fighting with each other, even Faith & Buffy, and that never happens. I think Spike knows Buffy loves him, and that it is actually over in a nice way. He is content to know it, not demanding, not needy. Spike, despite his greedy, selfish side, is honest about what he cares about, and that at this point is pretty much just her.

I don't hate Bangel by any means and I fully respect any fans choice to ship anyone they want. Having said that I am a stone cold Spuffy shipper through and through. Now having said *that*, the kiss still feels very in character to me. Angel and Buffy are the star crossed lovers that will always be connected and there's not a darn thing that can ever change that, end of the world included. Great reaction as always, C. Next one is gonna be bittersweet, for sure, but we'll be here and get through it together lol Can't wait (I think?) See you then 🫡

Don’t mind me, just wondering if we can expect last episode soon or until next week??? What’s the status doc?

It's refreshing to be in a fan space without shipper wars. It's definitely exciting to see Angel here. And yeah, the kiss was jarring. But hey, it's the apocalypse... again. Agree that Angel has more experience being ensouled than Spike, but I'd have to say ensouled Angel has had plenty of combative moments with Buffy. And Spike was quite a calming influence recently. Both vampires have a lot of growing up to do, but so does everyone on the show, really. No one's fully baked yet. ;)

Hey, there is always the Shanshu prophecy! Whether Spike or Angel get it. I just feel like Buffy deserves more than a “normal” human. That person would not get her like Spike or Angel. And in my opinion, a regular person would not be worthy enough for her. Even though that might sound a bit stuck up, I just don’t think Buffy could or should be with someone normal.

Just an interesting little detail, but there was a symbol outside the temple (where Buffy finds the older guardian lady) on top of the entrance. It looks a lot like the assembled totem pieces that the Beast (over on Angel) took from the Ra-Tet members in order to do the ritual to blot out the sun. I'm not sure if the writers ever addressed it but it feels to me that maybe they were trying to connect the 2 shows a lot more in terms of worldbuilding, and maybe they intended to introduce the scythe a lot earlier in the season but for some reason it didn't turn out that way. But seeing as the Ra-Tet are based on Ancient Egyptian culture and this scythe and this pyramid-like temple also pre-date Christianity (like Ancient Egypt), I think it would've been cool to connect those stories somehow.

"You are so gonna lose" is my favorite quote from this episode. Since by now you've already watched the finale, it's not spoilery to speculate on how you'll react to how they handle the Angel or Spike question. I think you'll feel satisfied with the resolution. At the time I still felt a little resentful, still wanted the Scoobies to directly apologize to Buffy. Now I like that Buffy felt she didn't need it. She's big enough to forgive them without needing an apology. And they are properly grateful for it.

At the time, someone online named it "Axecalibur" for the King Arthur connection.

They refer to this new weapon as an axe (which the main blade does look like) sometimes as a scythe (which is very strange because it is nothing like a scythe, but is obviously necessary for the ‘scythe matters’ joke) and but never as a halberd (even though Buffy’s description of how she can kill vamps in 3 ways matches well with a halberd, which has an axe head and a spiked hook at the top, and a large spike at the base of the pole) a shorter than normal halberd but still.

Can't believe we're right at the end already! I do personally find the kiss quite jarring too, lol. I won't yuck anyone's yum in regards to bangel but it does just always feel like a weird moment whenever I rewatch it. I think Angel showing up here is a great moment for our nostalgia for the series as we enter the final episode, and s7 in general does a great job at paying homage to the previous seasons in little references and cameos. We havent seen those two on screen together since Buffy S5! But the kiss itself does just throw me a bit in terms of these characters' individual narratives and feelings - especially when rewatching angel at the same time because of everything going on with Cordelia still being in a coma, lol.

What's golden about the reveal at the end is I watched David's name appear on the screen in the opening credits and you talked right over it. Love it, haha. Angel is always going to be special to Buffy. He was her first love. And he has also said that, in spite of having living hundreds of years beforehand, she was his. That being said, I do think the kiss they share at the end of this episode is more fan service than anything else. Whether or not it was in or out of character for them in that moment, I think that's what it comes down to. I enjoyed Buffy's relationship with both vampires (at least at certain times) throughout the show's progression. If I had to choose, personally, I'd want her with Spike for two reasons. One, Spike is my favorite character in the Buffyverse, whereas, "Angel's lame. His hair goes straight up, and he's bloody stupid." (Just kidding. I love Angel, but couldn't help quoting Buffy bot) And two, a big part of the reason Angel left is because of the curse. If Angel has another moment of true happiness with her, he loses his soul, again. Spike, on the other hand, obtained his soul by fighting for it. It's not the result of a curse and, so far as we know, he doesn't have to worry about losing it. In the end, it's probably best if Buffy ends up with a human, anyway. Someone she can age with. Speaking of the end, I look forward to your reaction to the last episode. It's bittersweet, because it's the end of one of the best shows ever created, but we had to get there at some point.

I ship Spike and Buffy more than Angel and Buffy—something I never expected when I first watched Buffy at 11. Back then I loved Buffy/Angel, but over time Spike grew on me as he grew, and their bond feels like two equals evolving together. Angel’s romance with Buffy always had a teacher–student vibe: the age gap, the old-soul wisdom. Spike and Buffy are messier but more real. He made serious mistakes—what he did to hold on to her was wrong—but he learned and changed. Their history spans years of shared battles and growth, from season two to seven. Angel and Buffy, sweet as they were, only truly had about a year. Even without the curse, they were probably doomed, and Angel became his best self apart from her, especially through his growth with Cordelia.

Oh my god, I totally forgot that Anya redeems herself in End of Days! I think I’m just overprotective of Buffy, so it always infuriates me when Anya speaks to her like that—not that she says it, but the tone, so accusatory. Who is she to judge Buffy that way? That’s what triggers me. That said, I really love what Anya actually says here. It’s true—she’s grown so much. I won’t fault her for words said in the heat of the moment. What still bothers me, though, is how no one directly addresses how they treated Buffy. It upsets me every time. In the end, I think some of it was the First’s influence: little judgments and doubts they already held, just amplified. So I let it go. I’m just happy Buffy gets her flowers from Faith and some of the Potentials. They finally see how completely badass she is. (And yes…the Angel thing!)

I have never rushed to watch your reaction as quickly as I did for this!

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

literally everyone has been bringing it to her attention for at least the past four episodes. it's getting beyond silly.

Tearing up when seeing Angel is SO REAL! The kiss is definitely not out of character, they also did it in season 5 at the graveyard after Joyce's funeral. What they have is extremely special, they love each other deeply, they never stop doing so, and they would do anything to be together (Buffy literally said in s7ep5 to Xander "I would've given up everything I had to be with him... I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this life"). They broke up because they couldn't be together due to the curse. The love never left, and it never will. So it makes sense that they kiss every time they meet.

anna

I don’t know if anyone has brought this to your attention yet, but when you start Angel season 5 episode 1, DO NOT!!! and I mean DO NOT!!! Watch the opening credits for that episode, MAJOR SPOILERS IN THE OPENING!!!!
