Looks like people figure he spent probably somewhere between 10 and 40 years repeating the day. It's kind of ironic that I've probably rewatched this movie more times than almost any other. Except maybe Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which for some reason my friend and I watched every day during our lunch break one summer when we were working on a raspberry picker It was so fun seeing someone experience one of my favorite movies for the first time!

Honestly, how long would it take you to go from zero to hero in both piano playing and ice sculpting? And then there is the time to get suicidal? And to have a daily ritual to help so many people? Not months but years. Don't forget It took him 6 months to become an expert at tossing cards into whatever it was, I forget.

Cass I just watched the YouTube edit because I was in the same boat you were: I needed something chill and easy and fun today. Thanks for helping me pep up a bit.

This was an unexpected treat - Groundhog Day is one of my favorite rom-coms, with a sweet performance by Andie MacDowell. She's also great in the Hugh Grant comedy "Four Weddings and a Funeral", which is definitely worth a watch.

Gaius Frakking Baltar

One of my favorites. Andie wasn't quite as popular career wise at it seemed when she burst out with "Sex Lies and Videotape", this, and "Four Weddings ...". She was a model turned actress and it seemed like they only kept her in safe parts. Maybe she turned down roles to be a mother as well. Remember that one of her "perfect man" requirements was "plays an instrument." Although it felt like he was bettering himself for himself instead of her at the end of the movie. Also remember that you said he needed to be playing an instrument and dancing by the end of the movie to make up for his buffoonery at the start. It sometimes feels like you might should be a writer. I'm pretty sure you predicted two lines in this one that weren't completely obvious lines to me.

I think the two tentpoles are (1) learning (what I assume is passable) French and (2) going from complete beginning piano to a jazz piano expert. Even practicing everyday that had to take quite a while. Even the longer stuff I could see not taking too terribly long to figure out (like the armored car heist).

The drunk guy from the train track scene that you said you recognized, was portrayed by actor Rick Ducommun. He played Cindy's dad in 'Scary Movie'. I recognize him from the horror comedy 'The Burbs' (1989) which he starred in alongside Tom Hanks.

James Smith

Among the million or so things I love about this movie is that they don't give an explicit explanation of what caused this or why. That's not the point. It's that Phil (and we) go through all the possibilities and realize what life is really for.

I would say that it was at least 10 years and probably closer to 50. For the piano alone that was 5 years, minimum. Probably closer to 10. The way I see it is that he probably indulged in debauchery for a few years. Stealing the money, tricking women into sleeping with him, etc. Let's say 5. Then he goes into his depression. Let's say a year of that before he decides to end his life (I think it would take a while before he would commit to that. Certainly more than a couple months). He spends a while trying to end it all, but probably not too long. Less than a year. Then he has that day with Rita where she suggests that it might not be a curse. After that, he's nice to people, he's reading every book in the library, learning new languages, piano, ice sculpting, etc. Apparently enough medicine to fix somebody's back. Given how good he gets at everything, minimum 15 years, but probably much longer. Then he has the day where he can't save the old man. He starts mapping out everything bad that happens that day and how to fix it. Probably takes him at least a couple years to get that right. It's a long time.

Man I love this film so much ❤️ This was such a good choice :) Even with its heartbreaking and bittersweet moments like the vignette with the old man - which still makes me tear up after a hundred rewatches - or the depressing montage of self-harm, it's such a comfort blanket for me. I could happily watch this on repeat...which is appropriate. It's my understanding that he spent years in this loop - I think the director, Harold Raimis, who also cameos as the doctor and was a fellow Ghostbuster - said that he was stuck for about 10 years or more, and I think he even joked that it was more like 10,000 years. Bill Murray plays this so well - as much as I enjoy his usual grumpy and cynical style at the start, his attitude in the latter part of this movie is so calm and soothing, and his chemistry with Andie MacDowell is so heartwarming. Speaking of Andie MacDowell, younger me was absolutely in love with her in this film, and I kind of still am lol This was just what I needed today 💕

Jordan McLaren

This is also one of my favorites. I've watched it as many times as...well not really, but a bit. I've thought he must of been stuck for years.

This is one of my favorite feel-good movies, it's great to come back to every year! Andie MacDowell is such a sweetheart in this movie~ Since you said you haven't seen Four Weddings and a Funeral, I definitely recommend it - especially if you like other Richard Curtis/Hugh Grant romance films like Love Actually and Notting Hill.

StrayConfusion

That was fun.

Love that you loved this! One of my fave movies ever. Also, another reason you might recognise Andie MacDowell is that she’s Margaret Qualley’s mum! There’s def a little resemblance there.

Melissa Reynolds

I think its been decades if not hundreds of years of the same day. He fucks around a lot but then becomes proficient in several fields, gets to know everyone. He tries a lot of different ways to escape before accepting his fate and finally there is nothing else to learn about but himself. It takes a very long time for a narcissist to escape their ego. In the end I think he notices that he likes Rita more than anyone else and decides to emulate her just for the sake of being like her. He is not trying to get her, he is not trying to escape he is just living in a way that has been modelled for him by a person with compassion.

The Testimony of Mushroom

Even though the concept for this film has been reused over and over again, I still think this is the best version of it I’ve seen.

Lime Pie

Omg so excited!!!!!!
