I thought your jaw was permanently fixed to the floor! That was a good 35 seconds. 😂 This was a big shock when it aired. I didn’t want to believe that it wasn’t Cordy all this time. These next few episodes will be exciting to watch and see your reactions. Can’t wait!

ON your opening comments: First I just want you to know how impressive and appreciated your ability to treat topics like consent in that scene with Wes and Fred with such empathy, kindness and a refined respect for perspective. I'm so glad that you looked at it again and agree that it could be seen differently particularly in respect to your life experience as a viewer. I was one who hoped you'd give it more thought but only because it's important to me that, whatever other character flaws are revealed in him kissing Fred given the circumstances, being a predator or an assaulter is not one of them. That pause, I agree, was him taking a beat to give Fred breathing room and read her vibe in that moment. Whatever his flaws, I do not for a second believe he would make an advance if he thought for a second that she was opposed to it. But other interpretations are valid, I agree with that as well.

Call me crazy........ However I think there's something different about Cordelia........... Love a good plot twist lol. Incredible episode. S4 is pure 🔥!!!!!!! Can't wait to see what's next

Loved how excited you were when Lilah showed up!

I have been waiting for this Cordy reveal haha. You have been sayin it the whole time bout Cordy bein off and this episode with it bein too easy to rensoul Angel. That's why I'm sayin just trust you're instincts and use you're best judgment and it'll click. Don't think about it like it's supposed to happen, but rather why is it happening. (That is how the writers set you up or try to confuse you. The classic look here and don't notice what's goin on over there) Cuz things don't just happen... there is always a reason, but only according to who.

Thank you for the re-upload with the subtitles!

Listen the vision that knocked Lorne out, and then had W&H come and core it out of his mind, was the Beast's Eye of Fire incantation. But he got it from reading Cordy. Then he lost it before he could warn anyone. Lilah Morgan was the last remaining WolfRam and Hart member. There is a definite reason that ALL of them have to be gone, perhaps so that any ways to contact other dimensional parts of the organization are lost, or something. Remember the zombie reanimation? That indicates that WR&H could still mount a defense mystically even though all of their people were dead. They don't employ vampires, (you can't trust them at all), they did have some vamp clients, but it mostly didn't work out. The skull of a soul-eater probably had some souls in it that it ate. It probably was surviving on them while trapped in the box and buried. Connors soul is kinda gold and glowy, apparently. But the souls that came out the skull were like white smoke, probably Chumash Indians killed by it. Cordy used a black magic ritual to fake the re-ensoulment, and they shouldn't have fallen for that, but because they were so lost without leadership and desperate and emotionally messed up for all kinds of reasons, they lost all judgement. Do two wrongs make a right? nope.

I vividly remember the end scene when it aired as a kid I was so shook. Looking back. that spell obviously didnt do what she said it \would. Was it maybe a spell to trick his reading abilities? Like give the illusion of a soul perhaps for a brief time? Makes you think.

thevoidbender

there's no need for this. she'll figure things out when she figures them out. this is effectively a spoiler.

@cass Take a look at the dagger in Cordis Hand. Who was the last owner 15 minutes ago? ;-)

I'm not saying I subscribed three seasons ago just to wait for this reaction, but...I was WAITING for that final reveal! You've (correctly) complained about how Cordelia has been behaving oddly all season, and this episode finally says "Yes, there IS something going on, it's not just bad writing". We still don't know WHAT is going, but at least now we know that it really is something, and not just the writers all messing up behind-the-scenes. To help sell that Angelus was sticking around and so we wouldn't think it was going to be a one-episode thing, the original marketing for this series of episodes all used the title "Angelus" instead of "Angel". Literally renaming the show. As I recall, it was very effective at making it seem creepy and 'real' that Angel was gone.

yeah i had to stop because i have a slightly slower copy (probably the pal) that i have to pause every five minutes or so to get the sync back. +1-ing that i would appreciate a re-up with the subs.

Loved the intro. That kiss didn't sit right with me. Wes as character is great but he's definitely not a good guy, he may have good intentions in most scenarios, but his actions are usually selfish or driven by ego. He's caused so much harm to some of the characters on the show, and he still hasn't apologized for kidnapping Angel's son and ruining Connor's childhood. Great episode and reaction.

wishing for poly is so real

😲😲😲😲 Shocked face is my favorite face!! 🤣

RIP Lilah Morgan, Mortonson University law school class of 1994. "She screwed over the world. A lot."

No subtitles on this one, Cass, can't really sync up

I think one thing to consider about the Wesley/Fred kiss is that Fred's relationship with Gunn was in a very rough spot. I forget exactly when it occurred, but I recall a conversation with Gunn and Fred in which he mentions that they had not been intimate since he murdered her professor. Their relationship was already falling apart on its own, without Wesley's direct involvement. That doesn't excuse Wesley's actions, but it does change how Fred reacted in the moment. I wouldn't say she cheated on Gunn, because she did not initiate the kiss, but her loneliness and distance from Gunn probably made her really confused while kissing Wesley. It's a really complicated situation and I don't blame Fred for not knowing how to react. Wesley, however, is another story... he's clearly in the wrong, no matter how much he cares about Fred.

AK

So I keep missing out on the fun in the comment sections lol. The way I've read the moment between Wes and Fred is that it wasn't an issue of consent, but Wes obviously shouldn't have initiated and Fred shouldn't have let it happen. There's definitely a vibe between them that's there, but now is obviously not the time for many reasons. Yes, this episode did seem long (in a good way) because so much happened. Lots of fun twists and turns in this one. And especially that ending. Your face in response to the ending was priceless. Obviously we have lots of questions about Cordelia and everything else. Guess we'll have to watch more to see if and when they're answered.

I think the title is definitely intentional. In a broader sense, Calvary can be used to describe any experience that involves intense mental or emotional suffering, with themes of sacrifice that tie into the broader narrative of Angel's struggles. And this is a bit of a stretch but another name for the place "Calvary" is "Golgotha," which means the "place of a skull." Gunn and Connor have to go to a site where a soul eater has been buried, chop off its head, and prepare its skull for the "ensouling ritual", making that scene a Golgotha, a "place of a skull."

This is a great episode - so much happens it's kind of crazy. Lilah's back. Angelus is loose! Cordy's evil? Lilah's dead?! I was similarly gutted on my first viewing. Lilah is such a gripping, charismatic character that it's hard not to love her, and even root for her in a weird way. Stephanie Romanov played her so well, it's a shame I've never seen her in anything else. I won't say anything about Cordelia to avoid spoiling, but at least we can look back at her behaviour this season with a bit more scrutiny. David Greenwalt was one of the key driving forces behind Angel. He was a producer on Buffy until the end of Season 3, at which time he and Joss Whedon co-created Angel. He was still credited as a consulting producer on Buffy up until the end, but he didn't write or direct any more Buffy episodes after he left. He was the showrunner for the first 3 seasons of Angel, and it was primarily his creative vision behind the wheel. It was his idea to bring Cordy over from Buffy for instance. After he stepped down as showrunner and was replaced by Jeffrey Bell, he was still a producer and even directed an episode in Season 5. He really doesn't get enough credit for his contribution to the show to be honest.

Jordan McLaren

Fun episode and reaction. I find it interesting that Lilah mentions the cavalry which would seem like a title drop; except calvary is a very different concept (the site where Jesus was crucified vs soldiers on horseback). Its a common spelling mistake so maybe the episode title was a misprint.

James Smith

There is a difference between desire and consent. Wesley correctly reads desire but he knows Fred is in a monogamous relationship with Gunn - she has not thought about Wesley that way before because she is in a monogamous mindset. She is with Charles and doesnt think about anyone else that way. Its beautiful and simple but our emotions and desires dont always follow along. When presented with the information that Wesley in really in love with her she is genuinely surprised and happy, its nice to be desired by someone you like. She is still processing this when he moves in for the kiss. I ship them, Fred and Wesley, I wish all three of them were poly so it could happen ethically but they are not and Wesley is so out of order here.
