I was thinking the other day about how much of Buffy/Angel lore (and plot) originates from below the ground. From the first episode, The master was trapped underground, and was trying to make his way out to the surface. Most of the monsters come from below ground, only a few (one from the moon) came from below. The Master, The Bezoar, The First Evil, The Three had to jump down into the hellmouth, the underground satanic temple(s), The mud monsters at the end of season 6, even Buffy herself clawing her way back from her coffin. Willow herself felt it coming from the depths of the earth in England.
Did you notice that all the First's cult has their eyes either taken out or sewed shut? Yet they all can "see" and work together anyway -- creepy.
All the manifestations of people the First becomes are dead people, except Buffy herself. But hey she died (twice) too. So I guess when we see it as Spike, we see William, actually, the person who died. That means that we could see it as any dead person, even one of the council, even Giles, if he is dead. Evil Giles sounds nasty. We already have Evil Buffy, and that is cool.
But in 7.01 we saw it turn into The Master, and Adam, and they were in demon form, not human. So WTF.
That banter in the alley between Willow and Andrew was tops. Willow recognized a fellow geek fantasy melodramatist (Willow took some Acting and Drama in college, you know..) and laid it on for him. She sounded like maybe she had been working on her intimidation speech beforehand.
I wonder if there is a market for steak sauce flavored toothpaste.

remember that pig that andrew tried to kill! it doesn't play any major parts in later episodes, but there is one particular scene that is really funny

The reason the hellmouth seal didn't open with Jonathan (from this episode's dialogue from Jonathan/The First) was because "It's my fault the ritual didn't work. I screwed up. I'm little—I-I don't have as much blood as other people. And I probably should've told someone I was anemic."
And I think you missed the dialogue from 7x07 explaining why the Duo left Mejico:
ANDREW: I can't keep having those nightmares.
JONATHAN: Me neither. Desde abajo te debora.
ANDREW: "It eats you starting with your bottom."

Not to make your comment section sound like a broken record, but season 3, episode 10: Amends. If you revisit that episode, it'll answer some of your questions about the First and the robes. Looks like you're already remembering a little.
So here we are. Third banger in a row. I love the conversations between Spike and Buffy in this episode. They're so meaningful. And also the reveal. It's a cool reveal. I think it's clever to bring back something that we only saw one time. And it's been long enough since we've seen it, that we really don't put it together until this episode. We still have lots of questions, though.
The First referred to the creature that came out of the seal as "a real vampire." It looks similar, though not identical, to the Master from season 1. This has always made me wonder if the Master, who was a very old vampire, was perhaps beginning to resemble what a "real vampire" looks like. It's just a theory, though. As far as I know nothing like that's been confirmed, but it's interesting to think about (I like thinking and learning about lore).
Anyway, great reaction. And don't worry, there's more to come.

I had a feeling this season was going to make you go a little insane with the figuring out-ed-ness of it all and so far I gotta tell ya I'm pretty satisfied with the results.

The scene is just a little too long so its easy to forget the establishing shot by the time the explosion happens (@~37 minutes to see the establishment shot).
I might have cut the scene down, or cut into two snappier scenes, both with an establishment shot.
Plus cutting the Watchers scene down could have given room for those few seconds to savour Spike's face.

Regarding butchers selling pig blood, that is very common in real life. There's plenty of cooking styles and cuisines that make use of pig blood as a key ingredient, either as a food itself or as a sauce/basting. Within the series, Angel has referred to buying pig blood from butchers for his food since his intro. It was even once used as a threat against Spike in season four to get his cooperation, by threatening to get the butchers to stop selling to him.
I like how they had Spike refer back to how he was REALLY BAD when he was killing people. Though Buffy is right that having a soul now does change him, a lot of people seem to forget that Spike was renowned as one of the worst vampires in history, second only to Angelus. He tortured people, and killed them for fun and pleasure even without feeding. He was Capital-E "evil". And I love the character development and progression we've seen over the past three seasons, but a lot of people try to act like he was ALWAYS 'not that bad'.

If you have time review season 3 episode 10 Amends so you can see our first time encountering the First. And yes that was the Watchers Council exploding.

Yes, that was the Watchers Council building exploding, and, yes, that wasn't the clearest bit of editing. But the worst bit of editing was the robed harbingers bursting in the second after Buffy said "I believe in you, Spike." It's such a beautiful moment, and I needed just a few more seconds to savor it and the expression of gratitude on Spike's face.

"Jonathan" offered two reasons why bleeding him did not open the seal: He's too small so not enough blood, and he's anemic. There was just a little more needed, like from a piglet.

The First was introduced in Season 3 episode 10 "Amends."
It tried to convince Angel to kill Buffy through a series of visions of past victims. And then Angel was going to off himself instead, but then it snowed. In SoCal. At Christmas.

After 7x5’s clash over Anya and all that Xander has become so much more understanding and respectful of Buffy’s choices regarding Spike and I love it. He has his barbs but the maturity in recognizing Buffy’s points and giving her the benefit of the doubt now instead of trashing Spike 24/7 even to the other Scoobies like usual is so refreshing

RIP to Harris Yulin who died about a month ago; he played head Watcher Quentin Travers and was an excellent character actor who always brought a lot of presence.
Really great reaction; the Anya/Xander good cop/bad cop hijinks really hit for me, especially since it feels like we haven't had a lot of time with Xander and what's going on in his mind lately.
