May 2025 Movie Recap

May 2025 Movie Recap

Comments

Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Movies (SPUMM) movies are ... weird. A Spider-man universe where no Spider people show up so its just villains? Venom might be the most watchable of them because of the goofiness of the character. The sequels and other movies might not be as enjoyable.

The Testimony of Mushroom

The only one of these I've actually watched is "The Faculty", which definitely has a special place in my heart as a "clever" horror/sci-fi film of the '90s. I just looked up the real-life story of Natalia Grace and...what the heck? That's monstrous. Everybody involved is evil three different ways.

Faculty has the same writer as Scream, Kevin Williamson

Since you like horror so much, I could try to recommend you The Cabin in the Woods, it's Whedon's only comedy horror film and it's probably a mixed bag. I also wanted to recommend you watch The Hitcher (1986 film), it's a pretty famous action horror film. What else? You recently watched a small 4-episode show. I could recommend Chernobyl, it's a 4-episode show based on real events. Of course, I'd like to see the reactions to the last one, but that's up to you.

I also watched ‘Lost Highway’ in May; I did buy it on DVD which means I will be able to re-watch it a few times to try and try to figure out what I think it all means (it is a David Lynch movie) In June I watched, ‘Mulholland Drive’ (2001); Betty (Naomi Watts) is trying to make her big break into acting when she meets Rita (Laura Harring) who has amnesia. Another great David Lynch film. If you liked ‘Lost Highway’ I think you would like this. my recommendation from what I watched in May -‘Thunderbolts*’ which I saw in the cinema, would recommend to any MCU fans; -Also watched ‘Final Destinations: Bloodlines” in cinema, lots of fun; would recommend. Also, it’s nice to see one last appearance from the late great horror icon, Tony Todd.

James Smith

I hated Severance season 2. It was all cliffhangers and no substance imo. I hope you will react to Dollhouse, the principal inspiration for Severance (and the better show out of the two imo), which is a Whedon show from 2009 that only had two pretty short seasons. It's a staple for Buffy reactors to react to it after finishing the Buffyverse 😊

Glad you enjoyed The Faculty and "enjoyed" Possum! Clea Duvall who plays Stokely in The Faculty is a prominent character actor who's been in a lot of things, but she was Marcie the Invisible Girl on the first season of Buffy, so a definite connection there. And you're very right about the Scream vibe, definitely feels like a follow-in-their-footsteps move tone-wise. Possum is a movie that I know is tough, but I think it's very powerful and chilling. It's about a lot of things, with one interpretation being that it's about Britain's relationship to Jimmy Savile, but I think it also has a lot to say about the stigma of being a survivor, and of course how we carry past trauma, and the ways in which it might emerge beyond our control. It was written and directed by Matthew Holness, who's a comedy guy with the exception of this particular movie and The Haunting of Bly Manor, in which he played the father. I think he and Mike Flanagan are fans of each other, as they seem to have some similar influences and interests.
