Angel: 3x13 Full Reaction

Okay…something really weird happened here.

First of all - apologies that I forgot to turn subtitles on until it was 75% through the episode!

But more importantly - there's no outro discussion for this video. For some reason, I decided to stop recording my camera & audio right after the episode ended, then went on to speak my outro thoughts to a camera that wasn't recording, and somehow didn't even notice until it came to the edit? Spooky stuff. I'll catch you guys up on my thoughts in the intro of 3x14!

Amy Acker (Fred) with her hair up, figure and bare neck and shoulders gives me legit Audrey Hepburn vibes.

Was excited for you to see this episode and yea that ending lol...That’s just classic Joss Whedon tbh. This is actually the only episode of s3 that was written and directed by Joss, and usually those are some of the best episodes of the Buffyverse. I see this episode as sort of Angel the series' response to 'Once More with Feeling' in the sense that its about putting the characters in some sort of artistic/performative setting and using that art form (musical theatre on OMWF and ballet/dance here) to help structure the story. But I believe Joss was inspired to do a ballet-themed episode in part because he learned Amy Acker (Fred) had about 15 yrs of ballet experience and wanted to incorporate that into the show. Which brings me to share this clip from YouTube. Would love for you to react to it but if not then just so you can enjoy a little laugh 😂 It’s a deleted scene from this episode (from the DVD box set) and I always wish they kept it in but alas….it’s not spoilery, just don’t read the comment section. https://youtu.be/po94GM4qvBg

Oh, FYI, Cordelia being half-demon now isn't a secret. Everybody saw her floating immediately after the change when she got her next vision. She's also been seen trying to float again and talking about it. You're right that they don't yet know what it all MEANS, but the simple fact that she's half-demon isn't a surprise waiting to come out.

I love this episode so much for introducing the world to Summer Glau. She played the Prima Ballerina. She was a ballerina for real, but had to retire and transferred to acting. This was her FIRST acting gig, and I'm still amazed at the performance she delivered. I actually have a recording of her "echo" monologue all by itself. For a while in the '00s she was one of the It Girls for sci-fi projects, and she appeared in a whole slew of sci-fi TV shows. Wesley's quiet breakdown when he sees Gunn & Fred kissing is a heartbreaking scene, because it really feels like a man who has suddenly lost EVERYTHING all at once. And nobody else even notices, because why would they? They had no idea he was even feeling things. And then he Stiffs his Upper Lip and tries to soldier on. I've never seen the ballet "Giselle", but it is a real show, and according to the synopses I've read it heavily features ghosts, revenge, tragic love, etc. so it's the perfect backdrop for the story of this episode. Angel references being possessed by the spirits of old lovers before and it always ending badly. We saw it happen to him and Buffy in the episode "I Only Have Eyes for You" from season two (When he was Angelus). That ghost-cycle always ended in a murder-suicide, which only differed for the two of them because he was a vampire and thus couldn't be killed for the 'murder' part.

I like this episode; it has a few moments for Angel that contrast his more serious "champion" portrayal with the mundane 'just a regular guy who happens to be a vampire'; which I always enjoy. Although I have to wonder if the writer was trying to outdo the "romantic" intensity of some of the recent Buffy episodes.

I love this episode - it's up there among my favourites for sure. It's the calm before the storm of the second half of the season, and a milestone for all the relationships. I know not everyone feels the same, but I really like Cordy and Angel together, so my heart hurts for him at the end and I like Gunn and Fred as a pair. Plus that scene in the dressing room is hotter than anything Buffy and Spike have done lmao. Always nice to see Summer Glau - she's very memorable as a single episode performance, and Whedon liked her so much that he hired her for Firefly roughly a year later, then later Dollhouse in 2008. Firefly and Dollhouse are both great, and full of Buffyverse actors, and I'd definitely recommend them if you're interested. The design for the ballet henchmen is so cool and creepy - I love that they're based on the iconic Comedy/Tragedy masks. Groo returns! I remember being dumbfounded when I first watched - I never expected to see him again after Pylea, and I was initially annoyed that he was getting between Angel and Cordy, but he won me over; the actor's charming and funny and I actually quite like him. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this one :)

Have you ever watched Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles? It has Summer Glau who played the ballerina in it and it is really good

Mark Milwain

The ballerina in this episode would show up again in the Whedonverse.
