Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 6x6 Full Reaction

I think this episode gets overlooked because the next one is a fan favorite, so glad that you still really loved this one! And since you really liked it, I really can't wait until you post your reaction to the rest of the season lol

Interesting that this episode is in your Top 20, I could see why for comfort reasons but I think it's quite weak compared to the other Halloween episodes.

Loved your reaction! 6.7 is coming...

You have a lot of theories about Willow's magical future. I'd like to test your theory.

Me too!!

Cass we all FELT it when you gagged at that kiss. This episode is often overlooked in retrospectives because there are a few DOOZYS coming up. But despite being overshadowed by the surrounding episodes, I always love it for the great character glimpses. We've seen Dawn shoplifting and pickpocketing several times before, but this is the first time it's been commented on or discussed. She boasts about it to Justin, and doesn't dwell on it, but now we know that she's doing it on purpose. With all of the talk about Dawn's first kiss, this is also the first time she has killed a vampire. Justin was "her first", just not in the way she expected (or wanted). Buffy has relied on Giles for the entire series as a mentor and father-figure, but here we see her actually offloading her own responsibilities onto him instead of asking him to HELP her carry them. She asks him to decide on whether or not to let Dawn go out, and then expects him to be the one to talk to her at the end. Buffy is 20 now, which is still very young (I'm old enough that to me that gets you called "sport" or "kiddo" or somesuch), but it's about the age when people start taking on responsibilities and making decisions for their own lives. Transferring from childhood to adulthood. Except Buffy seems to be reverting, and expecting "the grown-up" to handle things for her.

Just going to sit here now and stare at my screen until episode 7 comes up. Come on.... Hurry up..... (I'm kidding, just anxious) :)

Dawn stole a shiny coin with a dragon on it from the Magic Box, then twice had money given to her that night, and was allowed to go out on her own, was given a valuable school jacket, and got a big kiss, (or a few!). There must be all sorts of charmed objects in what's left of the inventory of the old Uncle Bob's Magic Cabinet, probably a lot of them cursed, Sunnydale being on the Hellmouth and all. Maybe it was a spelled coin. She got lucky again with a lucky shot with a pencil to dust Justin, and didn't even get bit like Janice did. Finally she got lucky again by Buffy not even being mad, and got the soft treatment from Giles. Could all be coincidence. Buffy thought Spike was asking her to go to bed, when he wasn't really, but then Spike rehearses what he will say to girls he is into we have seen that. So, hmmm. They share her big secret, and that along with everything else brings them closer. Buffy feels so "other" around everyone else, with their big happiness, romantic adventures, even Xander -- it's not jealousy really, but more like outsider syndrome in her own life where she is obviously the center of all the action. She takes charge instinctually whenever she needs to, or at least she used to, but now she kind of is isolated, and remember she is only 21 coming off a majorly sexed-up relationship with Riley, even though it broke her heart, and she "hasn't had any" for a while. Spike might be looking good, and seems to be able to keep secrets from the others, if not from her. She knows he has genuine feelings for her, and she kind of wants to feel something again, something other than oppressive responsibilities of Bills, and Mom duties. Did she really want to go patrol, or go have a bit of the rough and tumble, some violent fun with Spike bashing heads. She spent the whole of the last year saving Dawn over and over again, usually from Dawn's own childish behavior, and here we go again. Once she was on the case, and saw the vamps were out, her slayer instincts kicked in and she was back to her old self, kicking ass and spitting one-liners, back in control. Then afterwards back at the house, she was dumb, avoidy, Buffy again, using Giles as a crutch to emotionally check out again. Giles has decided to help Buffy out, and do what he can, and acquitted himself admirably this episode, physically and emotionally, but he has got to see that it can't go on, he is not really her parent, and he certainly isn't Dawn parent. Xander & Anya getting married, and being called "Grandpa" must make him feel that, that it is time to step away and quit being Buffy's soft landing for getting out of trouble. There just isn't much left to teach Buffy that she doesn't already know, or have to learn herself the hard way. I think he knows he can't stay much longer. The business is doing good, Anya knows her retail, Buffy as a Slayer is the best he could hope for, his own family estate, friends, and lovers are back in England; and he has to feel he has done all he can. There doesn't seem to be any big bad end-of-the-world stuff going on in Sunnydale at the moment anyway. Wilow & Tara are hitting a rough patch, this time its actually Willow's fault. She is overstepping, letting her pride cloud her judgement, showing off her magic, and taking it for granted. She should know the consequences of using magic; a mistake in a spell redounds threefold against the caster ; using magic for personal gain always backfires sevenfold the cost of what is gained. We have seen over and over again the results of spells made in desperation and for revenge and peronal glory -- the Cheerleader's Mom now a cheerleader trophy in a cabinet, The Mark of Eyegon came back to kill and torture and possess Giles and his college buddies, The Swim Team Coach got eaten by his team turned loch-ness monsters, Willows anti-lusting spell ended up breaking up her and OZ, and getting Cordelia skewered with some rebar. She messed up a curse on Oz and Veruca and Veruca showed up to kill her. Willow's magic only goes right when she uses it selflessly, against evil. She is in over her head and doesn't even see it.

AHHWOOO!!!... Ok, enough with the "werewolf" thing... I had a few observations: Giles did say something that was not usual in the grownup/ mentor role. He admitted anger in addition to disappointment in his hard talk with Dawn which is not the usual trope there. Also, Spike with his "rebel" thing more "grampa" than Giles. About Willow, I recall saying in an earlier episode comment about the "left-hand path" that Willow has proven beyond all doubt to be on. Now, this doesn't necessarily equate to "evil" or even "dark" but the temptation is there and there in a hard way. My understanding is far from perfect related to Wicca however, my take is that "right hand" is something like "...thy will..." and Willow is steeped in "...MY will...". This is where the danger is due to lacking sufficient wisdom to see the line that can't be crossed. I would trust Tara a lot more with that activity precisely because she wouldn't force her will on any matter related to magic and the will of another person. As to the romance, been a long time since I was a teen boy but I definitely feared being "lame" or "creepy" in about equal parts (and failed miserably to avoid either one on some occasions...and that's all I have to say about that). Stuff's awkward and I felt the cringe from decades past and halfway across the country. Good episode and exploration of subject matter though. Cheers.

Gotta appreciate the ol' double red herring.

Credit to Dawn for choosing Halloween, arguably the safest time of year to go out at night in Sunnydale, to meet her angsty teen quota lol. Out of the three Halloween episodes, this one definitely brings me the least Halloween spirit, but I'm impressed by how many character moments the show fits into an episode primarily focused on a single character. Almost every character dynamic is touched on in some way or another. I completely agree that watching Dawn kiss that "werewolf" for that long was uncomfortable because she feels like a little sister. As weird as it is though, I think he might have actually liked Dawn and he wanted to turn her, similar to how Drusilla was going to turn Xander into a vampire when every girl other than Cordelia was in love with him.

I love what they do with Willow's story arc this season. It's basically the culmination of a character arc that has been building for several seasons already. Willow has always had issues with identity, insecurity, feeling powerless, expressing or feeling negative emotions, etc; now we're starting to see the end result of that in a person who has been given, or discovered power in the form of magic. It's another reason why I love season 6.

Claire Eyles

I prefer Season 2's Halloween episode as my fun spooky season rewatch but this one has some fun moments. Enjoyed your reaction. Glad you enjoyed this episode of 'Buffy the Werewolf Slayer'
