Alien (1979): Full Movie Reaction

Alien (1979): Full Movie Reaction

Comments

I think maybe it was easier to get an R rating back then? The PG-13 rating didn't exist yet, so it was harder for films to qualify for PG. I know you have already watched Aliens. I think you might enjoy Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection even though they are not as good. I really enjoyed Alien: Romulus, and you could just skip the 3rd and 4th movies and go straight to Romulus after watching the first 2 movies.

Could someone tell me if this is the Director's cut or the original? I have to rent it, but I've made this mistake before, renting one when a reaction was for the other. Thanks.

I don't hold that against him

My spooky recommendation for the month is Lake Mungo. It's an Australian film in the style of a fake found-footage documentary. It's a purely psychological horror, relying on a dread ambiance to tell an emotional ghost story. One of my all time favourites and a cult classic. My horror runner up is The Wailing (Korean). This one is super scary, and quite long but an excellent example of the 'folk horror' genre. Finally, the Basque film All The Moons isn't a horror so much as a dark fairytale with a gothic ambiance. Still perfect for Halloween though! It's about a little girl who is turned into a vampire and her struggle to survive. It's really beautiful and moving and sad. Speaking of vampires, if you haven't seen Interview With a Vampire (the 1994 film) then you must! It's a vampire classic.

Even though it was 1979, Alien is really what I consider an 80s movie. At the time it was so far above the standard sci-fi stuff you normally saw at the theater -- science fiction in the 70s was like TV grade space soap operas with aliens being guys in bad rubber masks and stuff. A few exceptions were "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "Alien", "Star Wars". Earlier great ones were "The Andromeda Strain" , "THX 1138" , "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", and I guess "Star Trek The Motion Picture", if you like Star Trek stuff. "Aliens (1986)" is probably the best sequel ever made, not counting "Terminator II Judgement Day", which slays. There was a lot of 80s cheesy scifi, a huge boom, an embarrassment of riches, a popcorn bonanza. But some good ones you might miss unless you look are: "The Fly (1986)" -- truly great scifi horror with Oscar-worthy acting and amazing special effects. Romantic and scary at the same time. "LifeForce (1985)" -- British, but worthy. "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)" -- something completely off the beaten path. "Legend (1985)" -- Ridley Scott again (Alien, Blade Runner) but diving headlong into the Fantasy genre -- truly a beautiful film. "Time Bandits (1981)" -- very 70s feel and look, another unique adventure and style all its own. Steven King had a whole bunch of film adaptations of his books around then, but the standout is "The Dead Zone (1983)", and while its light on the horror, its strong on plot and very well put together. It's not as famous as "The Shining (1980)" of course, but everyone's seen that one. "From Beyond (1986)" is a mix of science fiction and cosmic horror, and not a great movie, but it has this weird "something" about it that makes it worth checking out. It's kind of unhinged and out there. "Hellraiser (1987)" -- would make a great reaction, but a lot of reactors have already done it. Clive Barker created a horror masterpiece with this.

Ooooooh yeah the TENSION of this movie. You are correct that on rewatch the actions of the characters will all have new meaning. The Alien has entered mass pop culture, so it's not surprising that you would have encountered it already. You've probably seen it on billboards, and toys, and references in other movies and TV where people talk about the alien. The sequel -- "Aliens" -- is one of the films where people say the sequel is just as good (If not better) than the original. I HIGHLY recommend giving it a watch. I recommend watching the Special Edition instead of the Theatrical Cut, but the good news is that both are excellent. This isn't one of the situations where people argue and say "This version SUCKS! Only lame people watch THAT version!" It's just a question of perspective and the way information is presented to the audience. Either way I will definitely tune in for your reaction. Oh, for your cough, I recommend trying some mucus-specific medication. General "cough drops" and "cough syrup" try to do a whole bunch of things, but if a cough is lingering I've found that focusing on the mucus helps clear it up.

No idea if you’ve seen it already, but I’d recommend the original Poltergeist for a spooky reaction. It was my favorite scary movie growing up

Did no one notice that at one of Veronica Cartwright’s close-up moments is when Cassie said “lost in space?” Am I the only one who sees the funny /irony in that? The movie deserves its accolades , just but a little too slow and theatrical for me. I understand building suspense (when not knowing what was coming next), but it was a little frustrating..for me. I know it’s a great film. 👍

In space no-one can hear you scream. The ships in Alien are very fast but the crew still needs to sleep in cryochambers because "Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space." - Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Voyager 1 has been travelling 38,000 miles per hour away from Earth for about 50 years and in that time it travelled 0.00005929% of the distance to the nearest star Alpha Centauri. If it were going in the right direction it would take another ~84 million years to get there. The Nostromo's crew travelling from much more distant stars in only 10 months is very fast. A bummer for them because if they were roughly half way home they already had a lot of extra time added by slowing down. Their original travel time was probably only a year but now, if they had made it back it would have been closer to two years. I get the feeling their contracts would not pay much for extra time in the sleeping pods.

I'm not sure when I first watch Alien but it was not in the cinema even if I was old enough for it, it must have been on TV or VHS later, I do know it scared me enough that it took a long time for me to watch it again. I did not cope well with horror back then, now it's one of my favourite movie among others in the genre. I think this is my favourite Alien reaction ever. If you're still looking for movies for October then Aliens is a must, it's the rare sequel that every fan of the original loves (afaik) and that many prefer to the original.

It’s my favourite film series. In terms of the franchise there are 6 more films and 2 spin-offs. The most recent of which Alien: Romulus is just coming to the end of its theatrical run. For reactions - definitely Aliens [1986] which was the next film released in the franchise, almost everyone says it’s just as good - if not better. I would recommend you watch the special edition if you can but I know that’s often not the version you can get on streaming platforms. The rest of the films there is quite a diverse opinion as to whether they even come close. Personally I love them all.

Martin Gardner

Another great watch-along! You will probably catch it when editing, but the "SOS" ... Ash and Ripley figured out it was a warning to keep people away. That is what prompted Ripley to want to go out after the crew.

SJ Lute

Great reaction! I really like how this movie plays with the audiences' expectations regarding the main character. The opening scene makes it seem like Kane will be the protagonist. Then it seems like it will be Captain Dallas, then Ripley. Regarding sci-fi horror, I'd recommend 'Slither'(2006) starring Nathan Fillion.

James Smith

Thoroughly enjoyable reaction... About the "R" rating, some writers, directors, and producers loved to "push the envelope" during the 70s into the late 80s. Occasionally flirting with an "X" rating in some of the films. Examples immediately occurring to me are "The Last House on the Left", "The ReAnimator", and "I Spit on Your Grave" (the last one being totally unpleasant and closest to a deserved X-rating). "The ReAnimator" might be entertaining if not already viewed. The cat? I don't believe the cat would have been directly harmed by the alien if both are left on their own together. The statement about the creature being a "perfect survivor" indicates that Jonesy would be neither a threat nor useful to the alien and likely left alone. Also a good chance that Jonesy as a type of "alpha predator" would find plenty of pests for food on a huge container ship.

Another SciFi Horror would be Event Horizon

Silvio Nolle

My all-time favorite horror movie...very fucking cool.

Steve Mercier

Interestingly enough, the original script ending hit on one of your ideas: the alien would kill Ripley and then send out a distress call in her voice.

Jorgalorg

Just watched it, it's the original theatrical.

Jorgalorg

Is it the original theatrical version or the director's cut? I don't have Hulu so I can't check and can't assume that Disney+ Canada has the same version. Looking forward to your reaction.

slypeartree

The next installment (Aliens) is one of those sequels that don't disappoint.
