Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 5x17 Full Reaction

I haven’t even watched your reaction to this yet so I’m not sure if you touch on it but the the specific line by buffy at the end “who’s gonna take care of us”, has always hit me really hard. That’s another little moment where she reverts to a child wondering where her parents are. It’s a very scary feeling to be so young and have no parents to ask for help or guidance.

I'm in a place where I can't watch right away, but I just watched this and really enjoyed it. I'll always be a shipper of Buffy and Angel chemistry. It's just so natural. So nice that he's able to be there and be her sounding board and help her through it for just a little bit.

Great reaction! One of my favourite little details from this episode is when we have that brief sequence of Giles at home having a drink with some music. The song playing is “Tales of Brave Ulysses” by Cream and it is what Giles and Joyce were rocking out to in 3x06 “Band Candy”….:(

And also the father of Jennifer Grey of Dirty Dancing fame.

Buffy needs some monster in her man if you are to believe spike. Would she still be interested in Angel if he was just a regular human? The Shanshu prophesy might be one of those monkey paw deals. Be careful what you wish for.

The old man in the magic shop is played by Joel Grey, a Tony and Oscar winner for playing the Master of Ceremonies in "Cabaret." A Broadway legend for decades, his next big role after appearing on BtVS was The Wizard of Oz in the original Broadway production of "Wicked." He's in his 90's now and still performing.

A lovely subtle callback is the short scene where we see Giles after the funeral. He sits with a drink and listens to Cream's "Tales of Brave Ulysses." That's the same music he listens to with Joyce in Season 3's Band Candy.

Didn't understand when you talk about Ben and suddenly you are speaking of Glory. Did you cut off a part of your video? It doesn't make any sense.

I like that last episode we were forced to look at Joyce dead, lifeless, blank. But this episode we talked about her, and then finally we see her face, beautiful and smiling in a nice picture, as the way to remember her. The horror stuff aside, it was nice to honor her character that way.

Direct themes from "The Monkey's Paw" Also, I particularly appreciated two other things: The magic guy humming the theme from "Peter and the Wolf" while puttering around in Dawn and Spike's presence. Also, a glimpse of William when he attempted to leave flowers at Buffy's house. I believe Joyce was a positive, moment in Spike's long life and his long, messy reuniting with the part of him that is William... Looking forward to the home stretch of season five.

The phrase "ashes to ashes, dust to dust," isn't in the Bible, though it's based on some passages from it. For instance, Genesis says that mankind was created from dust (chapter 2, and then there are more references to this throughout). It's found in The Book of Common Prayer. However, the part the follows this phrase: "The Lord bless her and keep her The Lord makes his face to shine upon her And be gracious to her The Lord lift up his countenance upon her And give her peace." is a quote from Numbers 6.24-26. “The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.”

Haven't given too much thought to that. Maybe a clue as to the imperfection of magic as a solution.

While "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" isn't word for word from the Bible, the basic idea is (god made us from dust, to dust we return and whatnot) it's been used at funeral services for centuries? IDK, centuries sounds correct. Willow's actions in this ep are super disappointing, but very in line with her established character. Ever since she got into magic she's turned to it for easy fixes. She tried to magic away her attraction to Xander, almost cursed Oz and Veruca, tried to mend her broken heart with magic. That resulted in lolz, but it's part of a pattern with Willow and is a major character flaw. Dawn didn't go through with the spell in this case, but it would have gone very badly.

It's so nice that you were comforted by Angel turning up, you're really in Buffy's shoes, which is a mark of good writing.

"Sometimes, dead is better". I always found the portrayal of Hank Summer as a deadbeat dad so curious in season five, because that's not what he was like in the first three seasons. He wasn't a huge figure in the show, but Buffy (and even Joyce) had nothing bad to say about him. In the episode in season one when everybody's nightmares came to life, Buffy's fear was that her dad was disappointed in her, but once the magic went away he showed up for their scheduled time like he always did. Joyce even reassured her that of COURSE he was coming, and what had he ever done to make her think he wasn't? Buffy lived with him over summer break between seasons one and two. He did miss their ice show birthday tradition in season three, but that was such a huge blow to Buffy because it was the first time he ever missed it. So my theory is that this all changed as part of the memory re-write when Dawn was inserted. Maybe the monks couldn't handle intertwining her so closely with three people instead of two, so essentially 'wrote him out' to keep the spell manageable. Or maybe it wasn't on purpose, but a 'natural' (so to speak) result of having two kids instead of one.

The demon egg was a fun 'Flinstones'-esque addition to the Buffyverse

We have seen the loft (or balcony as I think of it) in the magic shop before. Anya, Xander, Willow, and Tara were sitting up there during Buffy's "power" speech in 5×12 Checkpoint.

Christine Cox

Did I miss a meme about Ben und Glory? What does have Ben to do with Glory? I'm confused.

At first we may be locked in a trance by grief, unable to live, but slowly the realities of life bring other emotions and we forget, for a period of time, that there is a person missing - suddenly we feel their ghost and return to grief.
