I think the cruelest thing about this episode is they have the spike ordering a robot scene that really feels like a stinger/cliffhanger cut to credits moment and so then when you get the last final scene you're caught completely off guard

Xander is who he's always been to me. He's the wacky, humorous, dork man friend of a group of women. He has a good heart, but he doesn't always know what to do, or where he's going, and can be overly worrisome at times, and despite any pressure he feels he lives happily in the moment, or at least makes the best out of a given moment to the best of his ability. To me Xander is one of those people that is a contradiction, he has many layers (like shrek lol) which I can personally relate to myself, but can understand how to a lot of people it can be confusing and not make altogether sense. Some people's personality varies that doesn't always mean their inconsistant or lack genuity.

Thank you for putting that out there, so clear. I could not. Hopefully she sees it.

It's funny that you think early Xander peaking out every once in a while is bad writing because I think the contrary would be bad writing. Personally, I don't like it when characters completely change their personality because it's not realistic imo. To quote Darla, "What we once were informs all that we have become." Xander has matured into a much more emotionally stable and generally helpful person (evidenced in this episode), but his old self will and should resurface every now and then.

The show has already explained it, but it seems to be confusing you. To sum it up: Ben and Glory are separate beings/personalities that share one (shapeshifting) body. That's the revelation of Blood Ties, and what is also shown here. When one is 'active', the other is dormant and has no recollection of what the other is doing. So they are two, but they are also one, which is why Glory perceives that Buffy turned 'us' down.

This is one of the more under-appreciated Buffy episodes, probably because, as happened with you, the last moments are such a shock that everything else gets knocked out of your thoughts.

I think that Xander's reference to liking women who speak like April is a reference to how Anya speaks. But the rest of his appreciation of April was laid on a bit thick.
Giles threatening Spike is a bit of 'Ripper' which is very fun!

Yes, the April and Warren storyline is a parallel to Buffy and Riley. Which, its hilarious of the show to compare Riley to a sleaze like Warren who thinks women are there for his own selfish desires 😄
(kidding, I actually think the comparison is really supposed to be more about Buffy and April for Buffy to understand that she was a good gf and didn't deserve how Riley treated her, but still, funny...)

When she shut down April was trying to say "Things are always darkest before the dawn", a famous saying meaning things often seem at their worst just before they get better - and of course a play on Buffy's sister's name.

More than the devastating cliffhanger, the plot of this episode is very precient as it features Warren, a troubled young man, who is basically an incel, a classic toxic narcissist. The way he treats his girlfriend, with angry disgusted dismissal, instantly as soon as he meets any pushback to his demands, the way he runs away from the messes he made, his entire gross outlook on other people.
The thing a female viewer might not get about this story is that male viewers can relate to all the male characters. This episode was about men, and different aspects of the male personality. From Ben being unsure of himself trying to get Buffy's attention, to Xander being content in his life, actually deliriously happy and satisfied for once, (something that we are not used to seeing with him, his grown-up personality), to Giles being the man in charge, intimidating Spike with a firm hand. Even the kids at the bistro being little shits to April (the robot) is typical juvenile male toxic behavior.
Finally there is a touching scene with Buffy and April where they talk about how they are defining their self-worth by the male attention and approval they get, as if to put a stake in the point that women have been conditioned and taught by society that that is to be their viewpoint and how they internalize that idea "nothing without a man" or that "they are there to serve and soothe" the males.
Even Joyce started out stressing about being the perfect date, and everyone thought it was cute, like preparing for an interview, to be judged by men on their "fitness for purpose" as a woman.
One way to teach about the toxicity of societies fixed ideas is to take then way too far in fiction -- and boy does this show do that.
Even between Willow and Tara there was some "side-eye", taunting and jealous behavior, but it led Tara to step up a bit to defend her relationship and membership in the group, nice to see her coming out of her shell a bit more.
The concept of loneliness as a motivator for bad behavior is another subtext explored in this episode -- what loneliness makes people do that they are not comfortable with, or even twists them to extremes and degraded behavior.
I think this is the first time I've seen Cass turn pale after a reaction, and it's understandable.
