2024-07-02 19:38:04 +0000 UTCI love this movie. It's one for the gays and girlies with its complex and relatable exploration of the joys and tortures of toxic female friendships. The homoerotic undertone it captures is perfect, too. The fan consensus is that Jennifer is a lesbian and in love with Needy (and that Needy, to some degree, reciprocates). Jennifer goes after Colin and Chip because of Needy's interest in them; she is overly possessive of Needy; they used to play "boyfriend-girlfriend" together; and she is unable to kill Needy despite having many opportunities. There's quite a lot of subtle build up to their kiss in the bedroom which is less surprising when you notice these details. Needy's weird psychic connection to Jennifer is interesting, too. But under all that it's also a really sad story about the way women's bodies and personhood are exploited and sacrificed for men's desires. The film makes this point literal with how Jennifer is murdered by the band so they can be famous. Her body, her sexuality, is a tool they use to get what they want, and their objectification of it renders her less human... Hence the name of the film. The ending strikes the perfect note with human colour returning to Jennifer's face in the moments after she has died. She's just a normal teenage girl again, who suffered a terrible fate she didn't deserve, while Needy has to live on with the scars of it all.

I remember the advertising leading up to the release really emphasized the Megan Fox is sexy, the lesbian kiss and the "I go both ways" one liner. So when the film came out and it wasn't the kind of film that the trailers made it out to be, it killed a lot of the momentum and the attention on it dropped off.
