The line, "...six years ago, in 1989..." pinned it even more perfectly. But yeah, that audio is from Mallrats.

2022-06-19 05:46:25 +0000 UTCAlso... this is not my favorite MCU film either. Some of the pacing dragged, and some of the dialogue was kind of stilted. I personally didn't get the underdog vibe from her at all to be honest. She wasn't any more fantastic at the end than at the beginning. She was snarky even when she was being repressed. I didn't see a real character journey there, so the snark didn't do it for me. Now... Brie Larson being a wonderful actress, the one bit that does come through was not how her snark was powerful, but how her empathy grew. If she had a character arc, I would say it was her empathy. But it was Lakshana Lynch who brought it out, not the character of Carol Danvers herself. Vers/Carol was no more or less powerful as a person the whole film through; just her abilities were unlocked at the end. But it was Maria Rambeau and Talos triggered her awakening, self-awareness, and care for others. Now, in fairness..... less than a year before I bought the ticket for this film and sat in a theatre to watch it... I had bought a ticket to Infinity War and was riveted in that seat and in shocked disbelief. A film with unimaginable stakes. So comparatively, this film couldn't measure to it. But I must also add..... I collected Marvel comics in my childhood. I knew very well who Mar-Vell was. And the personal relationship/rivalry that the character had with Thanos. So... there really was no way for me not to feel a bit unfulfilled by the premise of this screenplay. So most of my criticisms are with the premise and script of the film. And the story it tells during the wait between Infinity War and Endgame. But I don't think there can be any denial of some of the great performances: Brie Larson giving Carol Danvers more of an arc than was written on the page; and boy oh boy did Lakshana Lynch have some steel in her. To say nothing about Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, and Ben Mendelssohn. I was falling over myself to see Clark Gregg as a young Agent Phil Coulson. I am a devoted Agents of SHIELD fan. I very much hope you will watch it. I originally became a Patreon user to support Agents of SHIELD reactors, in fact.

2022-06-16 07:22:38 +0000 UTCHeya! So... I just watched the full length on this one, having watched Ant Man & the Wasp. I do hope you get a chance to make it "out West". When you do, feel free to hit me up with questions, local knowledge and stuff. But from Ant Man & the Wasp, I wanted to mention a local knowledge tidbit, since I heard it in the Ant Man & the Wasp reaction. We don't say "San Fran". Like... ever. For us we refer to it like a person from the outer edges of the boroughs refer to Manhattan. We call it "the city".

2022-06-16 06:21:06 +0000 UTCThis is my least favorite MCU movie, but that doesn't mean I think it's a bad movie. I just like the other MCU movies more. Probably the main problem for me is I don't like overly powerful characters. And after they went to the trouble to power down Thor and the Hulk (compared to their comics versions) they end up making CM more powerful than she is in comics, over-powered in fact, which always ends with that character becoming a Deus Ex Machina, an easy way out of any problems that the story presents. The main example of this is Superman (especially silver age Superman), whose stories are often boring because you know he will just power his way through any problem that presents itself.

2022-06-08 12:19:16 +0000 UTCWell I am really glad you enjoyed, cause I did too. I don’t really understand the hate around this movie. And the off screen drama shouldn’t be directed at the movie itself.

2022-06-07 21:33:55 +0000 UTCit's funny how the one thing you loved the most about the movie, is also the thing what most people disliked about this movie: it's Carol's character. Seen multiple reactors watch this movie and they said they couldn't empathize with her as a character because she's just too perfect, too know it all, too stubborn etc. I don't agree with all that but I do think that the way her character was protrayed in this movie makes her one of the least interesting main characters in the MCU for me. I really enjoy this movie but the one thing that keeps me from calling it great is the lack of growth to Carol's character throughout the movie, cause it's kinda always the same. There's no real doubt with her, no obstacles to overcome, nothing that strongly makes me feel for her eventhough I want to. For example I felt way more for Wanda losing her brother in Age Of Ultron, being treated like a villain in Civil War and having to kill her love in Infinity War than I felt for Carol during this entire movie and Wanda was only a side character in all the movies she's been in so far. I just hope they add more depth to Carol as a character in upcoming movies because that's what's holding a lot of people back from really loving her movies.

2022-06-05 12:49:41 +0000 UTCThis film is... fine. It's a perfectly average film, I just feel the direction lets it down. Brie Larson is a great actress who usually can be extremely dynamic and emotional, and here... she's kind of a blank slate. Which I get story-wise is what the Kree wanted to make her, but not only do I feel that's miscast with Brie Larson who can't really pull off that stoic Swartzenager-In-Commando vibe, but even when she "breaks free"... she's just as stoic and bland. She also doesn't change as a character, she's one of the most static action protagonists I've seen since... well Swartzenager in Commando. Her allegiance changes, but she doesn't. And it's because she kind of suffers from Disney Live Action remake Protagonist syndrome, she's flawless. She has no real character flaws for me to relate to, I don't like perfect characters. It's why I was never as much a Superman fan as I was a Spider-Man fan, Peter Parker for so long had more flaws I found relatable. Carol Danvers in this film is the definition of a perfect character who really only exists to be a role model, but the best role model is someone who teaches people to overcome their flaws, not one who has no flaws to begin with. Take Tony Stark. He's incredibly flawed, and by overcoming his flaws and developing from them he becomes inspirational. Or to use a female example, without giving away direct spoilers, take Melinda May in Agents of SHIELD. She's an incredibly flawed character, but by working against her demons and learning to use them and embrace a strength deep within, she becomes one of the most inspirational characters in the franchise. In fact, Marvel Television's women were always strong, badass, developed, complex, and interesting characters. Jessica Jones, Daisy Johnson, Karen Page (Shut up sexists, Karen Page is awesome!), Colleen Wing, Misty Knight, even Runaways wrote the female characters better than it did the males (Which isn't saying much for Runaways admittedly. I mean, the show is fine. It's no Cloak and Dagger, but it's fine). I'd call Marvel Television more progressive if their powerful women weren't offset by their tendency to write Asian men horribly. Something Marvel Studios has done much better at. I feel Carol Danvers just doesn't compare to most of the characters in the MCU, male and female. Something that unfortunately gets lost like most actual criticism of this film because, well. Misogyny. A lot of hate for this film was blatantly sexist and showed a refusal to even give the film a chance. And because of that, people would try to fight the sexists by going to the opposite extreme, trying to pretend the film was the most perfect thing ever and that making one critique of it made you a Nazi. When really, the film is neither the "WOKE DESTRUCTION OF THE FRANCHISE WURST THING EVARRR" or the "Most amazing feminist statement of all time!". It's just a... fine film. It's fine, it's fine. It's far from the worst MCU film, far from the best too, but the worst thing I can really say about this movie is... they used the wrong No Doubt song. I get "Just a Girl" is more empowering on the surface, but this film's themes of gaslighting are way more in line with "Spiderweb". Which is also just a more badass, awesome song. I mean, c'mon, you used a No Doubt song but you couldn't use the better song that also fits the themes of the film better? This is legitimately the only thing about the film that makes me actually frustrated, but that's probably just because I'm a big music buff and can let myself get a little elitist over certain topics.

2022-06-05 00:16:52 +0000 UTChonestly it has not much to do with misogyny xD i like the movie but i totaly understand people hating brie larson and so they dont like the movie because of her. shes toxic. but i can seperate a movie and a person so i love this movie xD also alot of "professional" 100% not misogynistic people reviewed it low because the story for them was "to slow" and brie larson was acting to "emotionless" so there are problems wit hthe movie that said, i fuckn love it xD

2022-06-04 13:30:30 +0000 UTCUnfortunately, looking too hard at the reasons people didn't like this movie is just depressing... The misogyny surrounding the hate for this film is astounding. There was a massive campaign to tank the review scores before it even released.

2022-06-04 06:03:40 +0000 UTCStan Lee's cameo pins this movie firmly in 1994 or 1995. The script he's reading is for Kevin Smith's Mallrats, another movie where he made a cameo. They actually reached out to Kevin Smith for unused takes because Stan Lee's voice was so weak when they filmed the cameo so the audio you're hearing is from Mallrats being filmed.

2022-06-04 01:55:54 +0000 UTCI've actually warmed up to this movie more as time has gone on. Not the biggest Brie Larson fan in general, but I've actually grown to really like her performance as Carol, and I enjoy the movie more now overall.

2022-06-03 21:07:54 +0000 UTCI’m really, really glad that you didn’t take the advice to not watch this film because I knew that it would be right up your alley. Brie and the film itself (seriously though, that score) are really good and sometimes great. I wish that I could tell you that Goose returns in Endgame,

2022-06-03 21:03:03 +0000 UTCThe MCU did not need a Superman figure. That's my problem with "Captain Marvel". Even Wanda is too powerful now. Or was. Or, I dunno wtf they are doing now. Fingers crossed that Phase 4 can get pulled together into something cohesive.

2022-06-03 15:24:07 +0000 UTCThe problem with the movie is not that it isnt entertaining. The problem is the main character. She got her powers not by training or because she earned it or anything but by complete accident. And now she is so powerfull that she needs noone. She alone can do everything. In the Avengers they helped each other. She doesnt need help, she doesnt need partners. Nothing. Its just a random mega character without weakness out of nothing. The movie is ok on its own, but its total poison for the franchise

2022-06-03 10:23:59 +0000 UTCI had only one problem with this movie, actually one scene in this movie. The fight scene where they play "I'm Just a Girl" by No Doubt. Love No Doubt, but I honestly didn't feel the song fit the scene. I get what it was trying to do, but it felt like sloppy pandering, or pandering without feeling the room. There were a ton of female empowering songs during this time period. It felt like a song choice made by someone that didn't listen to 80's-90's music much and just grabbed something off the top 40 list. The comic story of Captain Mar-Vell is convoluted and messy. Captain Marvel is sort of a mirror character to D.C.'s Superman, sort of. A very overly powerful character. Honestly, this version is completely fine for a film universe, from a screen writer perspective. The story needs an Ace-in-the-Hole. In the comics, the Skrulls are really bad, but so are the Kree, lol. The Kree is a combination of a fascist species and the Ancient Roman Republic (if you remember, Yondu was also a Kree, a Kree slave that fought in the Gladiator pits) with the ability of advanced tech and genetic experimentation. The Kree enhance their race, with breeding, genetic manipulation, and tech with a focus of being the best species with the "right" to rule all others. Obviously, this is just peacocking. The Skrulls are obsessed finding the strongest lifeforms in the universe with the most powers (they are big in X-Men lore because they get obsessed with mutants and copying their powers) and copying that DNA with there's in order to make the perfect and most powerful Skrull. There is a fun story where the Skrulls got a hold of Deadpool, who has a combination the fastest healing ability but with the most aggressive cancer the world has ever seen. The Skrulls, believing to have the winning ticket on their hands, copy Deadpool's healing ability and genetically remove the cancer, only to find out that an unchecked aggressive healing ability actually mutants the cells into the most simplest form of life, a single celled organism, and ends up killing all the Skrulls that took on the his healing ability. But changing the Skrulls into refugees against a fascist race is totally fine by me. When story writing, you need to create empathy and a connection to the plot for the audience. Films are art, and art is just a mirror held up to society. SO, lol, to get your head prepared. We got Tony and Nebula on Titan and Tony is injured from being stabbed by Thanos. What's left of the Avengers are regrouped and getting a damage report of sorts, where Captain Marvel just showed up. Ant-Man is stuck in the Quantum realm. Hawkeye took the same deal as Ant-Man, after Civil War, and choose to be under house arrest and stay with his family. Thanos still has the stones and is on another planet enjoying his vacation, recovering from the massive chest wound from Thor's Axe; as well as, an overdose of radiation poisoning and severe radiation burns from using all the stones at once. Characters gone: Spiderman, Starlord, Mantis, Drax, Groot, Gamora, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Bucky, Falcon, Wasp, Wanda, Vision, Loki, Heimdal, Agent Hill, and Fury. Characters remaining: Tony, Nebula, Rocket, Black Widow, Thor, Banner, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Warmachine, and Thanos. Unknowns: Ant-man, Hawkeye, Valkyrie and the other survivors of Asgard. Things to remember: Hank Pym (the first Ant-Man) and Howard Stark worked together in the military and with Shield back in the day. Every movie with Tony Stark in it has Tony making better and better tech based on the lessons he learned from the previous film i.e. when Tony's helmet gets knocked off in Civil War, the next film we see him, Infinity War, he created nanotech to auto regenerate broken pieces of his armor. Additionally, in Civil War, when Warmachine got knocked out of the sky by Vision's missed shot on Falcon, Tony's jets couldn't get him to Warmachine in time to save him. In Infinity war, his nano tech reshaped his foot jets into a single engine rocket to catchup with the space ship leaving Earth with Spiderman and Doctor Strange on it. Thor failed to stop Thanos in time. Spiderman vanished in Tony's arms. Hulk and Banner are having issues. Only those worthy of being Thor can wield Thor's weapon, as we learned from the after party in Avengers 2 when everyone took turns trying to lift the hammer and when Vision easily grabbed Thor's hammer and handed it to him. Vibrainium is one of the strongest metals in the universe. This whole MCU, 22 movie, 10+ yr journey started with Ironman, Tony hammering an anvil, forging the first Ironman suit in a cave. The original Avenger team was the core 6, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Ironman, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk. When Falcon and Captain America first met, in The Winter Soldier, Steve and Sam were jogging and Steve would lap Sam, saying "on your left" which annoyed Sam. Tony took Captain America's shield at the end of Civil War, saying he didn't deserve it. That should be enough to get you through the references, loose ends, and reminders from the other films. Bare in mind, people like myself had months waiting between films so rewatching these movies happened quite a bit. Allowed people to pick up on more details and hints with the more rewatching, lol. You don't get that benefit, so I a reminder of some details from the last 20+ movies I thought would be helpful before walking into one of the biggest movie events in the last decade.

2022-06-03 06:56:44 +0000 UTCI like this movie too! I’m so glad you watched it! There was another reactor that skipped this and ant-man and the wasp, and their endgame reaction just felt tarnished, like it wasn’t as good as it would’ve been without these two movies. So thank you again! You rock!

2022-06-03 04:57:31 +0000 UTCIt battled expectations more than anything. So many people wanted ‘Infinity War 2’ but got an origin story from 1995. But it’s a great story for a lot of different threads, and a great movie. Great reaction too🍻

2022-06-03 03:59:54 +0000 UTCThis watch-along will make about the tenth time I've seen this one, and I'm fine with that. 90 percent of the criticism of this movie makes very little sense to me. I can come up with some criticisms, but not any more than most Marvel movies. I think you get out of it what you bring to it in yourself.

2022-06-03 03:04:47 +0000 UTCThis is an awesome movie. Loved Brie in this, she's such a fun actress, in many roles. I also think some of the negative feedback came from certain people not liking the high key "girl power" vibes throughout the movie, but I'm all for it! And it takes place in 1995 when I was born! Extra bonus points for that!!

2022-06-03 01:11:39 +0000 UTCI really enjoy this movie. I think it’s solid mid tier Marvel for me with a great performance by Brie Larson. My biggest complaint is the direction lacks a bit of energy for some of the scenes. It makes some of the action feel a bit sluggish. But nothing terrible. And all of the great relationships in the movie really pick it up. Brie just works with everyone. Fury, Maria, Yon-Rog, Great Intelligence are all just fun to watch when with Carol Danvers. Glad you enjoyed it.

2022-06-03 01:03:21 +0000 UTCOK I've said this already in one other post but I just wanted you to see it. When you watch Endgame, DON'T skip the first half of the credits. 2022-06-03 00:42:28 +0000 UTCThe reason he never called captain marvel for avengers 1 or 2 is that those were very time sensitive situations. They needed a response right then and couldn’t wait for captain marvel to show up from across the galaxy. He had no idea what was happening at the end of infinity war which is why he did it as a last desperate call. The cat scratching his eye was stupid but you could argue that he trusted the cat and then lost his eye. Captain America is still the first avenger. But the name for it had just not been marketed yet back then.
Calbert
2022-06-02 23:43:41 +0000 UTCPart of the dislike for this movie is how in retcons a few things, and makes the Avengers movie seem trivial. Captain America is the First Avenger, like his movie title says? No, they got the name from Danvers callsign. Shield and the tesseract experimenting after Thor one being the first time humans met aliens? No, turns out Danvers met aliens years ago. Nick Fury trusting someone and losing an eye? No, space cat. Plus Nick could have called for her support during the events of Avengers 1 and 2 but didn't think they were important enough. Like I said Im not as down on the movie as other people are, but I do understand some of the dislike, even if I don't really care.

2022-06-02 23:12:52 +0000 UTCI haven't seen this movie, but I remember hearing the controversy was more or less the actress attitude when marketing. Its unfortunate, but I'd like to think that wouldn't have affected the actual movie performance since all that happened after the movie was made. I dont care either way. I'm just waiting for spooktober. Gotta watch Evil Dead (2013) for us, vkunia!! It's tradition!!!
